POPSWhy do men shave? >> Alexander the Great never lost a battle, not to the Persians or to anyone else. But he did order his men shaved so that their beards could not be grabbed in battle. Same for the Romans. Yet you find many men who support a beard and I am sure there are a variety of reasons for that too, but I am not getting into that right now. I must admit though that a beard or a moustache alone on some men look very graceful. Now its your turn to talk, why do you shave guys? <<

POPSThe Courage to Live Consciously I wasn't sure which was better, Steve Pavlina's article on living your live with courage, or the quotes he used to illustrate his ideas. Either way, worth reading. How would you live if you had no fear at all? You'd still have your intelligence and common sense to safely navigate around any real dangers, but without feeling the emotion of fear, would you be more willing to take risks, especially when the worst case wouldn't actually hurt you at all? Would you speak up more often, talk to more strangers, ask for more sales, dive headlong into those ambitious projects you've been dreaming about? What if you even learned to enjoy the things you currently fear? What kind of difference would that make in your life?

POPSThe 10 mysteries of human behaviour that science can't explain Scientists have split the atom, put men on the moon and discovered the DNA of which we are made, but there are 10 key mysteries of human behaviour which they have failed to fully explain. The New Scientist magazine compiled a list of the everyday aspects of life which continue to confound the world's greatest brains, including the reasons behind kissing, blushing and even picking your nose.

POPSBut Which God? Sad. Another Christian Nationalist spews superstition. Seems Texas has an overabundance of this sort of thing. What's with these people?

POPSLet's Start Using Our Brains I've not vetted this account but if true it is a particularly stunning example of gullible saps causing real damage by their irresponsible actions.

POPSAnother Story of Religious Child Abuse More bone headed tales of misguided cult followers believing muttering pleas to their invisible friend will magically cure disease. Unfortunately, in this case, the recipient of the "prayer treatment" died for no reason. And because of religious brainwashing the 16 year old agreed to this non-treatment. Sad indeed.

POPSSuperstition Kills I support State/Church separation. Yet that stance is one of the reasons that legislators are hampered in dealing with child deaths because parents, because of religious beliefs, refuse to seek medical help for treatable conditions in their children. My first reaction is to hell with them. Pass laws that force them to take proper care of their children. But doesn't that place me into the same sphere as the Evangelical who tries to pass laws to force prayer in public schools? Granted, no one dies from prayer. Except when that prayer is used in place of medical care for treatable conditions. Therein lies the rub.

POPSRandom Quotes The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. Albert Einstein

POPSBirth date can affect personality Those born between September and December are more prone to panic attacks while there is growing evidence that schizophrenia is higher among those born in the late winter and early spring. "It is exactly what you would expect if it were temperature related," said Richard Wiseman, a professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, who has examined the link between luck and the season of birth. "Many of the effects reverse in the two hemispheres." Professor John Eagle, a psychiatrist at Aberdeen University who has studied the relationships between season of birth and mental health, added: "The two main culprits are diet and the seasonal fluctuations in nutrition, and the increase in infections during the winter." Astrologers have seized on the findings as evidence that the stars influence personality. But scientists insist there are biological reasons behind the effects.
