I remember talking to one of Britain's finest journalists and he was praising Mugabe to the skies. Twenty years later, after he had been expelled from Zimbabwe, he was not so benevolent, but he still insists that Mugabe is an intelligent and thoughtful man. I do not buy or subscribe to this journalist's publications. We have a saying in the North of England - he's a clever bastard that man!!!

That, despite the fact he was in full time employment, but was not earning sufficient to pay commercial rent. If any single issue is to break the tenuous racial cohesion, this is it. If we cannot look after our own, then we should definitely prefer others.

Was it worth, is it worth, any person giving their youth, health and sanity for a bunch of self promoting rouges calling themselves politicians? Yes. This requires that those who have given in the past, take up the gudgel and continue to demand equity for their services. One thing that they ought to do, make sure they are listened to. In the UK, those voices are The Royal British Legion and SSAFA. History has shown that for many individuals, these charities are to be found wanting. After all, the powers of these charities did very well for themselves whilst a great percentage of veterans had to settle with an audacious theft of their pensions. See http://www.afpg.info/

I watch spokespeople for the Police go on about service, danger, and their poor renumeration. yet they can, unlike members of HM Armed Forces, refuse to do tasks because they are dangerous, i.e. there is nothing in law that says a policeperson has to put their neck on the line. In fact, if they think it is dangerous for them, they can sit and watch. The fact that the mass majority of police persons would not and do risk their lives is incidental. Compare that with a troopie crawling towards a Taliban stronghold - the order goes out "fix bayonets". The soldier has no option, he does exactly as ordered. He - the soldier - has monies promised but not paid and the world is silent. Fact. The constable from day one is on a better salary than the soldier. Their families are treated like third class citizens. Illegal immigrants appear to have more rights than squaddies. MP's are ambivalent as far as families are concerned, and Charities claim benefits for which they did not earn. RBL does n

You do not put in place an inquiry that is supposed to be impartial then empower within that inquiry former Labour Solicitor General Minister Lord Mackay of Clashfern as an integral part of that inquiry, if you want a quick and honest explanation of facts. Whilst British Members of Parliament vote themselve enormous pension rises, massive unaccountable expenses perks- my MP received £16,000 last year for air travel alone. Not bad when flights are advertised at £29 single, that's 240 plus return journeys in one year, is he coming home on a nightly basis?- a £10K bung for "communication"? Not bad when a PC can be bought new for £200 and broadband is free with some providers, this more than illustrates that this Labour Governemnt is unfit for purpose.

The situation goes from bad to worse. I watched the Panorama programme on Afghanistan with a comrade of nearly forty years and was astounded at what we witnessed. It is the arrogance of perceived victory. Not wanting to give the enemy succour, it reminded me of a recent visit to a specialist training establishment, where a weapons instructor was giving a demo on hand guns. Like everyone brainwashed into believing that British procurement is best, his narrow narrative exhibited many flaws. The comment, "then only good them pea shooters is for is for shooting yerself" was complete misread by the expert instructor. "How long have you been an instructor?" was another question. "Ten years plus,"he replied. "That puts my forty years teaching ballistics to shame," retorts the greyish gentleman, who withdrew in disbelief from the demonstration.  Soldiers have been, for many years, first class servants but second class citizens. The insults inflicted on the soldier are coming home to roost. Finally, the Top Brass is taking note, and about time too. The majority of former soldiers do not belong to Associations, a fact that Associations ignore. Charities who claim to have Soldiers, the RAF and the Navy personnel and their families interest to heart, let them do with down with monotonous regularity. Next week an undertaking is to begin that will identify the shortcomings of a large service charity. This Royal Charter body gives the impression of wanting a public facade untarnished with the CHARITY of conscience, whose most serious indictment is that it does not allow their volunteer helpers to assist in some of the most tragic cases of neglect imaginable. Correspondence will be published that proves that PC had taken precedence over the need to CARE for vulnerable former soldiers and their families.

Better late than never. With typical MoD efficiency, Britain has purchased a US weapons system with no idea of how it will work. Instead of letting all the Regiments play with this toy and coming up with ideas, the brains at the MoD will pontificate, deliberate and ruminate over their latest innovation. All the time soldiers in the line will die through poor intelligence. Have they not heard of the RLI, 22 Sq. SAS, the Selous Scouts, the RAR. These regiments worked without the aid of these modern miracle machines and confronted an enemy vastly more numerous than themselves. It's called soldiering. For those who do not know, the aim - objective - of a soldier is to destroy the enemy - physically, morally, intellectually. Whilst Nato uses the Fighter Bomber to destroy supposed strongpoints in Afghan villages, their score is currently none out of three of their main objectives.

To even contemplate that the disquiet shown by an indigenous population for mass murders and plotters of such atrocities, can be equated to Nazi Germany in worse then insulting. I shall quote this the next time I talk with my Uncle Arthur who was one of the British soldiers who first entered Bergen-Belsen. If our love of moderation, fairness, equality and ancient justice is not to this New Britons liking, Heathrow is next to London. Instead of his people plotting to bomb planes there, they should use them for their original purpose.

Where have they been for the past century as even the dizziest of blonds can see mental trauma in people, especially those having once been involved in violence. Why cannot they see a correlation between the high number of former servicemen who are homeless, alcoholic or mentally ill - including PTSD? Do they only care because the Americans care for their Vets? Training was once so intense so that they could be reasonably sure that a soldier completing training had sufficient fibre to do what they had to do, to face the gore and unpleasantness of soldiering. With one third of homeless former servicemen AND WOMEN, ten years of trying to place this problem at the fore of public consciousness leaves me cold. Suddenly there is an awareness that injured soldiers are being neglected by the people they serve. A famous politician was close by, then a soldier, when a comrade was severely injured by a nail bomb, on the Ardoynne in Belfast. The whole concern then was for the most severely injured- the CO. Those close by with superficial wounds just went on with their work under a hail of petrol bombs, gelignite bombs and arms fire. By omission, the Commons Select Committee was informed that certain bodies obstructed the investigation, but the protocols meant that the offenders could not be named. If we had a Parliament worth a penny, the MPs should be up in arms and demanding that they, as the highest Court in the Land, be informed precisely which body it is? Naturally, this will not happen. When you have politicians who dare to lecture former soldiers on terrorism when their only experience was to have..."been within two hundred yards of a bomb in London", then it is little wonder that they have dropped below car salesmen in the respect league.
