POPSDigital TV Transition Confusing Thousands The FCC reports that tens of thousands of people are calling its consumer help line for advice as some broadcasters transition service to digital spectrum. Expect another wave of confusion around June 12, the new date by which all TV stations must switch over. Of course, the FCC foresaw all this, which is why it set up the help line in the first place.

POPSCool Spectrum Maps Show Who Won What These cellular maps are the best method I've come across for explaining who won what type of spectrum--and how much--in the FCC's 700 MHz wireless spectrum auction. Note the patchwork of winners in the A and B blocks--a huge contrast to the C and E blocks, which were swept by Verizon and Dish Network (i.e. EchoStar), respectively.

POPSSpectrum Auction A Disaster? So says an Arkansas senator, who blames the FCC. Harold Feld of the Media Access Project, a First Amendment nonprofit, disagrees in a long post well worth reading -- but says the senator's "heart is in the right place." With auction bids totaling more than $19.5 billion, at least the Treasury is happy.

POPSGoogle and the UK Spectrum Auction Ofcom, the UK's FCC equivalent, speculates that Google may be interested in bidding in its 2009 wireless spectrum auction, possibly to become an international mobile operator. Google's not commenting on its carrier aspirations either here or abroad, but FYI -- it could bid for UK spectrum if it wanted.
