Education outsourcing
Draxiis
by Draxiis  5-19-2006
For-profit management of schools has, for the past fifteen years or so, been touted as the "fix" for school systems (particularly in urban areas) that have failed in their given mandate and mission of educating our children. As a business model, Educational Management Organizations have not done very well. Now, NCLB is breathing new life into these companies. Are EMO's our last, best hope of revamping and revitalizing America's crumbling educational systems and the answer to the precipitous decline in the quality of the education received by so many of America's children?

WMP11 Beta release
Draxiis
by Draxiis  5-18-2006
I've given WMP11 a test run and it seems that Microsoft has gotten this right. WMP11 has a nice look and feel. Folks that are accustomed to iTunes' UI will feel right at home. I'm looking forward to purchasing iRiver's Clix player and giving WMP11 a full test run. I've got nothing against iPods or iTunes, per se (everyone else at home uses them, right down to my 6 year old!), but the exclusivity of the file format and Apple's unwillingness to license the code has always been a big turnoff. I'm really hoping that WMP11 delivers as promised.

Zoho Writer beta is now open to the public

After using Zoho for a bit (along with a host of other online WP apps), Writely (http://www2.writely.com) is still the one to beat, but if you didn't have an account before Google snapped them up you're out of luck, for now. If that's the case, Zoho seems to be the best of the rest.

Google notebook is now live!
Draxiis
by Draxiis  5-16-2006    2
I've been a big fan of Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/en/) for years. Their free version offers functionality that's what most folks would ever need. Recently, I also discovered ScrapBook (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/427/), a great Firefox extension that has the advantage over Evernote of not requiring a full application download and being available directly from my browser, albeit with reduced capabilities. Now along comes Google's Notebook which has the promise of obsolescing both, with the added advantage of being available from any computer with a browser. Since you can also share your Notebook pages, could it possibly be a Clipmarks killer, as well?

This extension is great for anyone who, like me, dislikes the arkward dual-textbox configuration of FF's toolbar.
