POPSObermann Indicts Bush as Criminal Conspirator Clip on the top link and you can see the entire Countdown episode on video. McCain is witness from personal experience that torture produces confessions, but not often the truth. The only convictions of any "terrorists" since 9/11 (the alleged Kahli Sheik Mohammed) was gained through "redacted" (edited) testimony after long periods of torture--not by any other evidence. (And for the record, the man in Guantanamo was not the mastermind of 9/11 and the government had no other evidence).

POPSBush Snubs War Widow This is disgraceful, but it does not surprise me. It just continues to show me how "unChristian" this "compassionate conservative" president truly is. Very few things in this world bind us all together. Death binds us all as we will all eventually see the grave, regardless of religion. If we cannot show compassion for each other, particularly when you (as president) are personally responsible for the orders that sent a man to war and thus, to his death, then we are no better than those we might consider our enemy. This soldier gave his life for Bush's war and thus his wife has sacrificed her husband to support George Bush...the least he could do is express his sincere condolences to this woman, regardless of whether he supports her religious beliefs or not.

POPSCindy Speaks Out and Leaves the Dems Cindy Sheehan makes some excellent points in this open letter to Congress. The Democrats were put into power after 6 years of total Republican control of the House and Senate primarily because the voters wanted them to end this war honourably. They have the vast majority of the country on the side of ending the war and cutting off Bush's blank check. Now that they had the chance to do it, they flubbed it and gave Bush what he wanted with the suggestion of "wait 'til next time." The public, I sense, is tired of waiting, and they do not see why the Democrats folded like a house of cards when they finally have the power to do something towards bringing this war to a close.

POPSTroop Extensions: CNN Opinion Page Read all the comments. Many are from actually soldiers or military family members and even vets. Some support the extension, others do not. It's just CNN, but it is an interesting "snap-shot" perspective on how some people feel about what is happening to our troops (and their families).

POPSWas Bush Trying To Blame The Democrats For Military Extensions... ...Despite Pentagon Planning For Same For Well Over A Year? Read the whole article yourself. I have read on a few blogs, speculating, that the reason the leak happened was to avoid the chance for Bush to blame the Democrats for the extensions, but since he hasn't "yet" vetoed their Iraq spending bill, it is "too early" to blame them for hurting the troops, therefore this new extension falls squarely on the Administration, since no action by the Legislative Branch has yet been made law. A lot of military families are angry at the leaker...but what if the leak was a way for someone to "blow the whistle" on the Bush Admin, not just rile up the troops? Either way, it does smell fishy.

POPSI Guess They Aren't Pickin' Up What He's Puttin' Down Anymore Of course, I can only speak from personal experience and I have had the opportunity to see the president give a speech, in person. Soldiers are becoming more and more disenchanted with Bush and his policies. It doesn't help that their families are even more displeased. My husband is headed for Ft. Irwin (where Bush gave his recent speech) in June. He told me he's glad that Bush stopped by sooner, rather than later (when he will be training there).

POPSBush Health Plan: Who Benefits? This plan may be great for people who already can afford health insurance, but it will not level the playing field for those who are currently having difficulties getting affordable health benefits. Regular premium costs is what keeps many from buying into insurance, increased deductibles will keep them from buying into the Bush plan. It's about the money. On the list of priorities in life, health benefits fall at the bottom. When I was a single mom and actually had a job that offered health benefits (10 years ago), I had to pass because my paycheck barely covered my life expenses, I couldn't afford for my boss to take another $150/mo out of my check for the so-called benefit. I don't imagine that many families, today, can afford that benefit, even with a future tax deduction attached. So millions of Americans will continue to live without health insurance and will risk paying way more when there is an emergency.

POPSBush Bracing For Brash Audience I didn't vote for the guy and I have never been able to watch him give a speech without cringing. The last time I actually did watch, a few weeks later my husband and his fellow soldiers had orders to go to Iraq. I'll pass on watching, tonight as well. I'll watch "the google" for the highlights.

POPSThey Report. Who Decides?
Are you gonna believe your lyin' eyes? I live on a military post and work for soldiers and their spouses...haven't heard anyone yet say how they support the decider. I have seen a lot of families torn apart by the Iraq War (not just deaths--which I know people who have lost loved ones, but also a large number of divorces). I've seen a lot of soldiers and their wives crying and cussing about being redeployed. I've even been to one of the decider's press conferences...sat close enough to lob spitballs at 'im. No one I was sitting around was "cheering" then, either (maybe because attendance was "mandatory" for some of them and at least, historical, for most) and that was three years ago. I was only there because I was the Media Director for the Libertarian Party in CO at the time. My credentials as a military spouse was all the press pass that I needed). Soldiers are re-enlisting because most other good paying jobs went bye-bye. So you can't point to that to PROVE "accept

POPSJust Doin' Their Jobs The article pretty mentions my hubby's unit. It doesn't surprise me that the troops speak "positively" about what's to come. Ask a Wal-Mart employee, "on the record", what they think of the company that helps them put food on the table and they'll tell you everything is hunky-dory. Nobody wants to bad mouth their boss if it means that life will be made more difficult for their families. A soldier who speaks out cannot be fired (per se), but he could be up for lots and lots of extra duty and maltreatment from other soldiers. In fact, whether we like it or not, whether the troops support the war in Iraq or not, they understand that they signed a legally-binding document when they joined up. For them it's better just to do the job they have been assigned and save the bitching for family and friends. They are caught between a rock and a hard place. Personally, I wish that Bush would remove the rock and bring the troops home.
