Former Major Label Band Seeks Fan Funding
Digidave
by Digidave  3-18-2008
I have been thinking increasingly about the business model of journalism. In the past - it's been something I've gratefully avoided. But I recognize that my young atypical career, as pointed out in an idealab post, is not sustainable. Still: I think crowdfunding, although a paradigm shift of the business model of journalism, has potential. Read the post below, from one of the beat bloggers, and imagine that instead of a musician that had just been dropped from a label - this blog post was about a reporter recently let go from the San Jose Mercury News.

The Journalist Leaders of Tomorrow
Digidave
by Digidave  3-9-2008
Since interviewing Eric Eldon from VentureBeat I've come to the same conclusion: GigaOm, TechCrunch, VentureBeat, ReadWriteWeb, Mashable and some of the other super-tech blogs are leading the way in beat blogging, whether they adopt the term or not. Their beat is tech, which has lent itself to experimenting in beat blogging, but their methods can be adopted.

"True" Citizen Journalism?
Digidave
by Digidave  2-20-2008
I recently came across Neaju and has the same reaction to their catch phrase "true citizen journalism." I am not convinced that having an editor means that the content on OhMyNews or NowPublic, or Broowaha (where I'm an editor) etc, are no longer "citizen journalism." Check the comments to the post below for a conversation that includes professionals, professors and students.

Steve Outing has a new project which aims to give advice to anyone who is working in the niche of news publishing online. The fact is - there are a million little tricks out there which can make your site easier, functional and cheaper to run. GrowingYourNewsWebsite.com, although a long url, is a spot to find some of tips.

I'm really looking forward to catching up with Lila King - who heads CNN's iReport.com. I'll be seeing her in Atlanta later this month - I'm curious to find out exactly what CNN has planned.

The Media Is Social

FastCompany moves to Drupal and turns their site into a social space. It's not a full social networking site ala Facebook - but as Edward Sussman notes - it doesn't have to be.

Len is actually one of the few people from NowPublic I have yet to speak with. But, from this report - I like the way he thinks.

Mastering the Art of News Letters
Digidave
by Digidave  2-4-2008
The pitch letter is just the first email you send out to your sources. But beat bloggers will need to send out the occasional email to touch basis with their sources. Online organizers have the email news letter down to a science. We can learn from that.
