The Biggest Threat to the West Lies Within Itself, Not with Islam
    Kore7
    by Kore7  10-18-2007    10
Simon Jenkins on threats to peace and democracy. This defeatism led the American Congress to allow its president to authorise torture and detention without trial in what Senator Robert Byrd called “the slow unravelling of the people’s liberties”. It enabled a British Home Office to curb free speech and habeas corpus. It arms police, fortifies buildings and impedes the free movement of citizens. It makes every Christian suspicious of every Muslim.

the article is more elaborate. but it points towards self humor as an attractive trait but only if backed up by achievements. this too is a matter of emotional and otherwise affordability.

    A Legitimate National Debate
    cniq_cniq
    by cniq_cniq  5-31-2007
"Some conservatives shared that view at the time and even more do now, most prominently William F. Buckley and George Will. If you are vocal, or literary, on behalf of this sensibility, you are eligible to receive disagreement but not disrespect." "The same holds true if you maintain the war was a great idea at the time, the best available choice in the circumstances, but the resultant bog offers no benefit for our lingering. Here again you can make a case that proceeds from the premise that people of good will proceeded with good intentions to undertake an effort in good faith but deduces that fate did not produce a good result. Nothing undermining about saying we made a good investment but the company flopped and it is time to cut our losses. This is the language good people use when they participate in constructive debate."

    Vietnam & Iraq
    cniq_cniq
    by cniq_cniq  5-16-2007    1
"We were learning in our school today All about a country far away, Full of lovely temples painted gold, Modern cities, jungles ages old. And the people are so pretty there, Shining smiles, and shiny eyes and hair . . . Then I had to ask my teacher why War was making all those people die. They’re so pretty, so pretty. Then my teacher said, and took my hand, “They must die for peace, you understand.” But they’re so pretty, so pretty. I don’t understand." "This is exactly the mentality I was brought up with, concerning Vietnam. It took a while to discover the truth: I guess I was in my late teens. I was also well familiar with a famous poster: 'War Is Dangerous for Children and Other Living Things.' Uh-huh: It turned out that the longed-for Communist “peace” was far more dangerous to children and other living things. Which, by the way, was more dangerous for Anne Frank? War or 'peace'?"

    Democrats Follow Bush's Lead
    cniq_cniq
    by cniq_cniq  6-17-2007    1
I don't intend my comments as an endorsement of President Bush or much of his agenda. That said, I find it interesting that over the past six years, many Democrats will echo the thoughts of GW after having vilified him for espousing such views months or years earlier. Remember their outrage when Bush and members of his administration spoke of 'Old Europe'? I guess it is only an example of imperialist unilateralism when spoken by evil Republicans.

I don't care which side of the debate you're on. Read the citation and you can only assume Mr. Olbermann is arguing against withdrawal until the last two sentences. It does not fit in with his rant in any way. Talk about reinforcing the stereotype of empty talking heads..

The 'Surrender And Defeat' Party's Quagmire
    merrie
    by merrie  11-24-2007
When it became apparent in August that Lt. Gen. David Petraeus would have good news for Congress, House Majority Whip James Clyburn of South Carolina warned darkly such news would be “a real problem for us.” The Party of Surrender is floundering. Yes, it is time to talk of “quagmire.” But the quagmire is not the artificial one in Iraq, which the media and the Left had hoped would doom George W. Bush. This is a quagmire of the Democrats own making. It is a quagmire of defeatism and surrender, where a common-sense approach to our national security has been replaced by partisan measures aimed to enrich trial lawyers and endanger Americans. And it is a quagmire in which the Democrats are now stuck.
