POPSMicrosoft: No New Xbox Anytime Soon One of the things that make boxes like the Xbox and PS3 more useful is that they're connected to the internet, and can download new software updates that radically change the feel of the machine. In some ways, the "New Xbox Experience" released last years was like getting a whole new system.

POPSWii Sports Is Best-Selling Game Ever Wii Sports is obviously a big deal. But these record-breaking numbers have a lot to do with the ever-expanding market for video games -- consumers from kindergarten kids to senior citizens are playing games now. Credit Nintendo and the innovative Wii for much of that expansion -- but understand that in the grand hall of fame of gaming, Wii Sports isn't even on the same shelf as Super Mario Brothers.

POPSWill Digital Distribution Kill Game Stores? There are plenty of gamers in the world who would delight at the failure of stores like GameStop -- they're frequently criticized and disliked. But it's important to keep in mind that digital distribution also indicates that the game may well come loaded down with DRM -- and that it's harder, if not impossible, to resell it or install it on another computer.

POPSEA Pulls Out Of Take-Two Bid EA is a giant, but they lack the creative spark that Take-Two possesses. If they're not going to buy the company, they better come up with some new ideas of their own, and fast.

POPSNY Passes Video Game Label Law Similar laws have been thrown out in states including California and Illinois -- and it's a good thing, because they're absolutely stupid. Why should video game makers be forced by law to label their wares this way, and not creators of other forms of media?

POPSGTA IV Sales Top Half A Billion If there's any doubt about the relevance of video games in our society, consider this: Last weekend's number one movie, Iron Man, earned $101 million -- a fifth of what GTA did.

POPSNew World Of Warcraft Expansion Almost Ready The release of a new WoW expansion is a very big deal in the gaming world, and a huge money making opportunity for Blizzard. This one is particularly important because there is more competition than ever in the MMO space, and Blizzard needs to demonstrate that it can continue to produce content that will absorb long-time players.

POPSEA Makes Bid For Take-Two Electronic Arts is a titan in the video game industry, but it's been a little lackluster lately, affected by a certain malaise and lack of creative talent. You can only crank out so many sports-franchise sequels, you've got to come up with exciting new stuff... and Take-Two is pretty good at that.

POPSMicrosoft Lets Gamers Design Games "Microsoft wants to do for video games what YouTube has done for video..." and just like YouTube, 99% of the content created with these tools will be utter junk. But it will be cool to see the rare game that's actually fun to play.

POPSWill Apple Get Into Mobile Gaming? The iPhone is an attractive gaming platform -- full screen, touch interface, built in accelerometer. And mobile gaming is a huge business for the phone carriers. It makes sense that Apple would want a piece.

POPSThe Art of Virtual Destruction When I'm playing a video game that has a destructible environment --say, smashable windows or furniture or whatever-- I always feel compelled to destroy every last sprite. So Clive Thompson's essay resonates with me -- I think we need to step back and appreciate the joy of virtual destruction. People complain that video games are too violent, but I think they provide a point of relief, a place to get out negative energy safely, instead of releasing it in the real world.

POPSMeet The Game Changers Interesting choices here. Bigshots like Iwata and Carmack are givens, but more attention should be paid to young savants like Kim Swift, who created Portal...

POPSCan't Find A Wii? How Bout A Raincheck? This is pretty lame. For one thing, you have to go to GameStop. Most gamers have a serious love/hate relationship with the store. But the bigger problem is that the program doesn't start until next Friday. As if a trip to GameStop wasn't usually a big enough pain, now you've got to go the weekend before christmas! Have fun!

POPSThe Warcraft Laptop If you buy a Warcraft-themed laptop, you are officially a giant nerd. And I will still pwn you using a slow and dated PC.

POPSWhy You Can't Find A Wii You might want to blame the continuing Wii shortage on the evil machinations of Wario or King Koopa. But the fact of the matter is that Nintendo just can't make enough of the devices to meet demand --even though the company has increased production from about 1 million to 1.8 million a month.

POPSGaming Giants Fail At Green Tech When Apple placed last out of 14 companies last April, the company promised to clean up its act -- and has now climbed to number 11. Let's hope Nintendo, Philips and Microsoft follow suit. Since game consoles are such huge sellers, that's a lot of pollution and waste out there.

POPSInternet Addicts Get Sent To Bootcamp I have no doubt that the internet can be addicting, and that some of these geeky kids desperately need to get away from the computer and get some sun. But a government-funded deprogramming camp seems way extreme. Why not have a bootcamp for kids who stay inside and read too much?

POPSSony's Achilles Heel Is The PS3 The dismal performance of the PS3 gaming console continues to hurt Sony. This is the company which far and away had the #1 device during the last generation of video game consoles --and now they're in a distant #3. The picture gets even worse when you consider how Sony counted on the PS3 getting Blu-Ray players into homes and helping that format win the high-def DVD war. Now, with so few PS3's in homes, the company's home entertainment strategy is pretty much broken.
