Alternative Gaming

There are other modes of games out there. Just like there are conventions specific to documentary, horror, and comedy, there should be differences between games with distinct purposes.

If you Suck at Sports, do you Suck at Life?
DarkYodeler
by DarkYodeler  8-7-2007
Orson Scott Card goes on to say this about organized sports for kids: "Too much like the real world, too little like play. When I wrote silly poems, that was play. That was just flat-out fun. My parents didn't get involved and nobody yelled at the ump." He wishes that "a kid who's lousy at sports but good at music or theatre or writing or videogames should get as much encouragement and honor as any athlete. But he won't." The only time I had fun with sports was when it was just for fun. If it got competitive I left because I could think of a lot better things to get upset about. I poured myself into drama, debate, reading, videogames. Now I'm 26, married for four years, a filmmaker, and a CEO of my own company.... and I still suck at sports.

Bigger, More Violence

Instead of rehashing gameplay and mechanics or standard narrative devices, focus on what can be made that will change the world. What is it in this idea that is so revolutionary it will knock the socks off anyone who sees/reads/plays this thing.

Long cycles, it takes a long time for big corporations to get on board, but they can mean big pay-offs.

It's good to pay attention to your customer and how they behave, but also pay attention to how the customer finds out about your product.

Wasteful War
DarkYodeler
by DarkYodeler  6-28-2007
Can we ever find an alternative? Wars continue to be waged, but as weapons and technology get better and better, war becomes more expensive and destructive (and I'm not just talking about physical destruction). We lose our ability to truly help others when we put our resources toward destruction. This article does not refer to the present day conflict directly.
