Purely a political move by the administration feels you pain on high gas prices. Oil and natural gas on the OCS is still as off limits as it was before the president made the announcement.

It's Official: U.S. in a Recession
Brian Wingfield
by Brian Wingfield  12-1-2008    8
Want to prove wrong the pundits who, earlier in the year, insisted the U.S. was not in a recession. Here's your answer. The National Bureau of Economic Research, the leading arbiter on these sorts of things, says the U.S. has been in a recession following a peak of economic activity in December 2007. Not that anyone hasn't already noticed.

Congress Strikes a Deal on Stimulus

Napolitano to DHS
Brian Wingfield
by Brian Wingfield  11-21-2008
Obama's selection of Napolitano as Homeland Security Secretary shows that he's thinking about immigration policy. But DHS encompasses a lot more than just immigration--including cyber security, transportation security and disaster relief. What are your thoughts on Napolitano and Obama's other reported Cabinet picks--Eric Holder as Attorney General and Tom Daschle as HHS Secretary? And what of Hillary Clinton as a potential Secretary of State?

Not Rubinomics Part II
Brian Wingfield
by Brian Wingfield  11-24-2008
Nice take from NYT's Jackie Calmes on the influence of Bob Rubin on Obama's economic team. But don't expect the Obama era to be a reprise of Rubinomics, which focused on balanced budgets and deregulation. There's going to be much deficit spending and a shift towards regulation in the next few years.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and health care guru Nancy-Ann DeParle are tapped to fill the dual roles in the administration originally slated for former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. While Sebelius, the HHS nominee, will get most of the ink from the media, the one to watch on health care will be DeParle, who is nominated to head the White House Office of Health Reform.

Images of the Recession
Brian Wingfield
by Brian Wingfield  4-2-2009    1
In the 1930's, the U.S. government sent photographer Walker Evans to rural areas, where he documented the Great Depression. The NYT is taking a slightly different photographic twist on this downturn, asking readers the world over to send in their recession-themed photos. It's an interesting use of new media, and a pretty good example of the fact that, as journalism evolves, readers (i.e. not just paid journalists) will become increasingly involved in the creation of the news.
