The US decision to "stay the course" in the Iraq war, which was also widely mocked and criticized, served to thoroughly demoralize the jihadist movement. It was the way to rid the Middle East of a tyrant, draw in and decimate al Qaeda, and an effective way to ultimately defeat al Qaeda and jihadist philosphy, that could never have been done in Afghanistan alone. Once again the democrats have been proven wrong on Iraq and wrong on how to fight and defeat al Qaeda. History will provide Bush and his administration with a legacy as a brilliant war president who executed a brilliant, difficult and daring war plan successfully. Dissent is a deep tradition in U.S. politics, and this war has become a bitter subject. It is evident, though, that the opposition to Iraq after the Democrats won control of Congress in 2006 has put these candidates in a corner. For the past year, Democrats in both the Senate and House have enforced rock-solid party opposition to every jot and tittle of the Bush policy. They now have four candidates running for the U.S. Presidency who seem to believe it is to their political advantage to deny manifest reality.

POPS What Shameless Liars The Media Are The debate at home over the Iraq war has shifted significantly in the two months since Gen. David H. Petraeus testified to Congress and President Bush ordered the first troop withdrawals, with more Americans now concluding that the situation on the ground is improving. Even antiwar groups that once denied that security has gotten better have recalibrated their arguments to focus on the failed efforts to reach political conciliation among Iraqi factions or the risk of war with Iran. The evolving public attitudes reflect, or perhaps explain, a turn in Washington as well. While Bush and Congress are still fighting over the war, the debate has moved to the back burner as Iran, spending, health care, the economy and other issues generate more political energy.

The U.S. operation, called Arrowhead Ripper, began with a series of carefully orchestrated house to house assaults. This was an intelligence-driven battle with precise information, gleaned from overhead surveillance using unmanned aircraft, signals intercepts and willing Iraqis who came forward. The combat was sharp and at times furious. American casualties rose in late June; the enemy fought knowing full well that losing Baquba would force them to retreat into the empty northern deserts. By the end of July, al Qaeda's decision to regroup in Baquba left it a fractured, relatively leaderless force, stripped of concealment and popular support. Once in the open terrain of the deserts, al Qaeda fighters became easier targets for surgical hits from Special Operations teams. But successful counterinsurgency operations don't capture fixed objectives. They create what soldiers call "white spaces," areas devoid of influence, political vacuums that compel occupancy by either an enemy seeking

POPSSanchez: Media's Reporting of Iraq War Endangered Soldiers' Lives Whoa! I hadn't heard this part of his conversation. I wonder why? And concerning this assessment....I could not agree more. Perhaps if the media hadn't been so aggressively portraying the situation in Iraq so inaccurately, the 'nightmare' would not have been such as he considered it.

POPSABC Leak Severely Damages War Effort I am reading an interesting book on the Mahattan Project and the Los Alamos Laboratory. Leaks such as this would have been dealt with severely, as they should be. I fault the Bush administration for not using the full war powers of the country in prosecuting these traitors.
