POPSIn Africa- The cellphone is the single most transformative technology for development" "Democratic Republic of Congo, with a population of 60 million, there are just 10,000 fixed-line telephones, but more than one million mobile subscribers. In Chad, the fifth-least-developed country in Africa, usage jumped from 10,000 to 200,000 in three years. They can call their relatives in town, for example, and ask how much is a bunch of bananas, so they get an idea of what the price is for their produce"

POPSUniversity Research Labs Produces Too Much CO2 Hervé Philippe, a Université de Montréal professor of biochemistry, is a committed environmentalist who found that his own research produces 44 tonnes of CO2 per year. The average American citizen produces 20 tonnes. Hervé Philippe“I did my PhD on nucleotide sequencing in the hope of advancing our knowledge of biodiversity, but I never thought that the research itself could have a negative impact on biodiversity,” he said, during a recent biology department symposium. He doesn’t believe in one magical solution, but rather in transformations adapted to each area. For universities, he recommends having less frequent international conferences, increasing the use of videoconferences, avoiding research on well explored topics, reducing publications and evaluating the amount of CO2 produced by research projects. POPSAnti-Missle Tests To Start for Commercial Jets What's shocking is that its taken so long. There have been attempted attacks - especially on El Al flights (see Kenya), and it seems like this would be a high profile terror target - shooting down a planeload of Americans.

POPSStupid Intelligence My goodness. Even Alan Dershowitz recognizes an incomplete, flawed, and/or misinterpreted assessment of Iran's nuclear program. Yet, those with the BDS have hopped on the NIE as though it were handed down from God.

POPSEye-Tracking Device Lets Billboards Know When You Look at Them to the office colleague who might wait in your doorway to establish eye contact before interrupting. "Eye contact is used to negotiate attention, and it’s fascinating how it works in humans," Vertegaal says. "We can have technology do the same thing." A phone on vibrate-mode already does something similar, but I love the dream.
