POPSTongue in Cheek Guide to Battle Science Relying on the general public's lack of scientific knowledge these tactics are routinely employed to rile up the masses against issues that certain groups oppose on ideological grounds.

POPSD'Souza's Normal BS Dinesh D'Souza, widely known for his hopelessly weak proslytizing on the World Net Daily site is seen in this clip interacting with that expert on science and medicine, Greta Van Susteren! They fit well together. Another good reason to avoid the Fox Noise Channel. The interesting thing is that the more we hear from D'Souza the more bizarre he becomes. He does appeal to the Ultra Right though.

POPSWhat? Paying for Prayer Only in America. I'd like to be subsidized for the altar to Zeus I'm building in my backyard. I'll be big enough to ward off the flu for my entire subdivision. It's true. America is getting stupider and stupider.

POPSAmericans Science Ignorant Judging from the arguments on clipmarks surrounding such controversial topics as stem cell research or abortion it is readily apparent that Americans generally simply don't know what they're talking about.

POPSBrains! Brains!! As we increasingly move onward in our quest to better understand how we work, the human brain remains on the frontier of targets to look at. No longer are we satisfied with the homunculus seated in our cranium in grand Oz fashion. Nor does the pre-science religious concept of soul address the practical workings of the human mind.

POPSRay "Banana" Comfort Has a New Book (Yawn!!!) The Banana God, Ray Comfort, just expelled another book out of his rectum of a brain. This Christian apologist is so over the top that his screeds are actually side splitting funny. Watch the YouTube classic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGMuIyBK5P4) for a taste of Comfort at his best. AS far as I'm concerned, Old Ray is a true representative of much of what's wrong with evangenitals these days. The only downside of posting this clip is that there are still enough science challenged folks out there that will accept what Comfort says as valid proof of their dogma. So be warned - if you flunked high school science you may be sucked into the "Comfort Zone".

POPSLouisiana Marches Into 12th Century Creationists are really hooked on straw men. These science ignoramuses aren't aware that there is no controversy concerning evolution except what is being generated by the Discovery Institute. Yet people continue to buy into the Red Herring of "teach the controversy" and "present both sides". What they don't understand is that there aren't two sides to the issue. Yes, there are questions concerning the mechanisms of evolution but the concept itself is not questioned. And the idea of a creative intelligence behind the whole thing is simply religious dogma put forth as pseudo-science. Remember, these are politicians that are playing to their constituents. They both certainly are in need of a course or two on basic science methodology.

POPSReally! It's the Real Truth The scientific credentials of the authors of this article become evident when we bother to click on the About Us link: "The Real Truth magazine and The World to Come program are produced by The Restored Church of God. We teach all the true doctrines of God, as taught to Christ's Church by the original apostles, tracing our roots directly to the first-century Church." Enough said... BTW, the article is exactly what you'd expect - filled with straw men, red herrings and ignorance. But you will get your full helping of dogma.

POPSZeitgeist of the US Clipped is the preamble to a very short article explaining what is meant by anti-science and some of the ramifications of it. Since there is an undercurrent in the US that is anti-science I thought this would be a nice introduction to this topic.

POPSBelief vs Trust Frequently theists defend their faith by implying that atheists must have "faith" also. This clip addresses this argument and offers a rationale that is understandable to people who are questioning religion. Try it, you'll like it!

POPSTexas Zombies! The picture becomes clear. Zombie hordes shambling towards you. Tattered corpses muttering insanely, "Theories...theories...they're only theories..."

POPSPZ Lambastss Palin Palin (or her speech writer) trying to pander to the "low information voter" unfortunately uses a really bad example to make their point. And Parrot Palin evidently doesn't know enough about science to comprehend how ignorant she sounds. But I bet it plays well for the target audience it's aimed at. We really need to catch up with the times.

POPSI'm Going for a PHD in Alchemy This stupidity is common across the country. A majority of the population is so ignorant that they are incapable of separating superstition from science.
5
POPSJesus Horses and Sarah Palin Sarah "Speaking in Tongues" Palin explains how she believes that dinosaurs and man lived together. This is precisely why the taboo of not discussing one's religion is wrong. This woman's viewpoint needs to be brought out and examined in the light of day. She holds ideas that have consequences in an increasingly technological world. By her own statements, she clearly doesn't have a clue what's going on.
6
POPSScience/Make Believe Constant vigilance is needed to combat these lying, snake-oil salesmen from interjecting their brand of theology into science classes.
9
POPSMcCain's VP Choice a Marginal Creationist To be fair, it doesn't appear that McCain's pick for VP is a dyed-in-the-wool creationist but she still believes in the absurd notion that biblical creationism has a ligitimate place in the science classroom. Her ridiculous "teach the controversy" stance is of course the back door ploy by religious fanatics to gain a toehold in public classrooms. I don't see them siding with Native American's to teach their particular creation myth.
5
POPSScience Battles Ignorance By ignorance I mean literally ignoring reality and substituting myth and superstition. The solution is simple. If the students insist on replacing reality with dogma on science tests let them be graded accordingly.

POPSOver the Top When I first saw this piece I was sure it was a parody, possibly from The Onion. But no! This guy seems to be for real. He's associated with the Creation Science Association of Mid-America and this was published in the CSA News. Hmmm, I wonder if their secessionists too?

POPSHallelujah! Finally a ray of hope in the God forsaken science blasphemies. I'll pray that you stay on the earth.

POPSCreationist Shows His Stuff Here's a pretty typical tirade by a fundamentalist Creationist that pretty much touches on all the points that Creationists get wrong all the time. About the only point he makes is that he's pretty ignorant about science and adheres to the talking points of the conservative right. My question is how many of these proselytizers will have to be proven wrong before they're eventually shamed into admitting that they've been lied to. The sad part is that many certainly have children who are also subjected to these ignorant views thus the ignorance is allowed to be passed along generational lines.
3
POPSOne More Time for the Learning Impaired It always helps to reiterate for the scientific challanged among us (and in the US that's a majority of the population) the difference between law, theory, guess and wishful thinking. Pay attention people, my patience is running out. And yes, you'll have to read the whole article to reap it's rewards. Learning does have it's costs so ante up! Don't let ignorance keep you sounding like a complete idiot.

POPSMore Ignorant Comments About Creationism Jindal, like Bush himself, must have dozed off in basic science class when they were discussing what science is. It's no mistake that Americans are woefully ignorant when it comes to science. This wouldn't be a problem but for the fact that they want to spread their ignorance to school children too. ID is the pig with lipstick. It's Creationism dressed in a lab coat. It's not science. Period.
5
POPSChristian Zealot Faces Firing Once again we're witness to an attempt by a Christian fundamentalist to indoctrinate school children into his cult. The interesting point was made that 1) for eleven years people have complained about his classroom behavior and 2) other science teachers have testified that they had to reteach students that took this loon's class. Now the school board is finally looking into sacking this "teacher".
8
POPSBranding for Christ A "science" teacher in Ohio is under scrutiny for mixing religion and science. This miscreant not only is a fundy nut but a liar too. I'm sure the kids in his class are getting the latest in science education (if they lived in the bronze age, that is).
10
POPSScientific Framing - Do We Need It? Recently there's been a controversy in the scientific community concerning scientific framing. That's framing in the sense of presenting views and facts in such a way that they appeal to a larger percentage of the population. We hear this mostly in the political realm but it applies equally in the scientific realm particularly where science and politics intersect. Is it the right thing to do? Is it too Orwellian?
11
POPSCreationist Science Teachers Would administrators sanction teaching alchemy in place of chemistry? How about palmistry in lieu of statistics. How about replacing basic meteorology with the Thor hypothesis? These people have no business in a science class teaching science. Either move them so they do no harm or fire them.

POPSA Rational Review One can hope that Ben Stein can now be laid to rest as a fraud, a liar, and a snake oil salesman. One would also hope that the mental health profession would lend their services and have counselors on hand after viewing this drivel to reintroduce the viewers gently back to reality.
6
POPSReligious Fantasy Contrary to what you might hear, the Ben Stein movie Expelled is not based on science. It is a propaganda film promoting the fake controversy over evolution. Admittedly, the majority of people in the US actually believe this nonsense. It seems that they are also willing to contribute to this BS so they can justify their creationist dogma. I'm beginning to hear the banjo track from "Deliverance" being hummed by the masses. Looks like the importation of scientists is going to be the new growth industry in the US soon.
