POPSKook of the Day My creep-o-meter just pegged itself and has now been reduced to a smoking pile of molten metal. And has anyone made the connection between Mr. Moon and lunacy?

POPSColors of Philosophy From the article and the main point, as far as I'm concerned: But that doesn’t mean a lack of religious influence — on the contrary. Committed minorities have had a tremendous influence on cultures and even on politics. Just look at all the faith-inspired social-reform movements animated by people of faith. But Martin Luther King Jr. did not get the Civil Rights Act passed because he had the most Bible verses on his side but because he entered into the public square with compelling arguments, vision, and policy that ultimately won the day. Those faith-inspired movements are disciplined by democracy, meaning they don’t expect to win just because they are “Christian.” They have to win the debates about what is best for the common good by convincing their fellow citizens.

POPSOlberman Special Comment Unfortunately you'll have to go to the original site to see the video. Clipmarks doesn't support it. It is well worth the small inconvenience.

POPSMcCain's Desperate Move While it may be that all VP picks are politically motivated, the good choices usually are those that besides being politically advantageous are also beneficial to the nation. After the nation discovers who Sarah Palin is and what she believes I think that McCain will realize what a colossal blunder he has made. Or maybe not??

POPSAre We Safer Now? I doubt if the public's safety was forefront in this misguided attempt to silence protest during the RNC. Partly because of hysterical paranoia of terrorists the powers that be have long used the pretense of protection to denigrate and undermine our most basic rights and freedoms. And do we stand up and raise our fists in anger over theses blatant stabs to our freedoms? Afraid not. It seems everyone just sits back in their easy chairs and watches as the powers that be wall off protesters to Orwellian "Protest Zones". Yes, bad people want to do us harm. But a modicum of sanity should accompany our plans to provide a reasonable level of protection from these people. As it is now, this smacks more of politics than of legitimate protection.

POPSHere We Go Again This somewhat disappointing position by Obama may be simple politics or it may be a sign of increasing involvement by religious organizations in government. Already we've seen the problems this can cause, mainly in the realm of churches to discriminate according to religion. If the rumors are true, churches will be able to discriminate in hiring if "certain conditions are met". I can't help but wonder if this is a ploy to garner the "evangelical" vote. Of course this still doesn't make McCain any more disirrable as a candidate.

POPSJohn "Christ" McCain? Showing the eloquence demanded by the head of the Georgia state GOP, Sue Everhard, demonstats the strange reasoning of religious politicians. She makes the direct comparison of McCain to Jesus Christ and then denies making this comparison immediately afterwards. Oh well. :-(

POPSBush is an Idiot Bush, never one to rely on diplomacy when bombs will do the trick, opens his mouth again and nonsense spews out. What a loser.

POPSSally Kern Bigotry Here she is damned by her own words. What she says is not new. Bigots like her have been saying this for a long time. What is new is that now we can cast their words into the light of day for all to see. And this person is an elected official! Shame on you Oklahoma.

POPSLaw Abiding Immigrants Another straw man that ultra nationalists love to offer shows that it has no legs. With much of present day conservatism based on fear manipulation of the population this study indicates what a little sunshine can do to rank prejudice and bigotry.

POPSPredictable Huckabee Win Frankly, I'm not surprised in the least. The state that tried to set back the teaching of biology 150 years has given a rousing endorsement to the most biblical candidate in quite a while. How does commander and preacher sound? The inauguration should be fun. I'm all set to watch Dino, the Jesus Horse, leading the parade down Pennsylvania Ave.

POPSUh, Who Cares What Religion Obama Is? Evidently this "issue" has captured the imagination of religious people around the US. Maybe they're not familiar with Article VI of the Constitution. The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States. The popular view today would seem to be that this article was simply a "suggestion".

POPSFacts Don't Impress Bush What an ignorant, biased, bigoted, ideologue. Do you people still want to elect a President that you could sit down and "have a beer with"?

POPSFox Noise - News You Can Ignore Considering the extraordinary inept vetting that Faux News uses, this story comes as no surprise. Is it any wonder that the least informed are viewers of this fake news channel?

POPSHmm, Astrology or Astronomy? I seem to recall a certain president mouthing these same sentiments. I suspect history may show him to be at least one of the most ignorant people to hold such important office.

POPSIf it quacks... This should bring a chuckle or two, depending on the darkness of your sense of humor.
5
POPSRomney's Hornets Nest Another commentator speaks up about the disastrous attempt by Romney to make dogma the National mantra. Is there a journalistic shift taking place? Are people waking from their 6 year slumber aboard Bush's Ark? Are they finally seeing the actual harm that this quasi-theocratic administration has wrought? Is there hope?
2
POPSNo Cold War - Maybe Just a Chilly War Do Russians "require" a strong tsar in much the same way that the USA requires a Godly President? Are national politics of both countries more dependent on the popular perception than on factual reasoning? Recent events in both countries might suggest this is so.

POPSClueless in Palm Beach If it wasn't such a serious topic this clip could be seen as funny because it completely misses the mark. It seems that our present Congress just doesn't get it. This is not about politics. This is not partisan. This is one man attempting to do his job of protecting the Constitution of the United States against enemies both foreign and domestic. Why they continue in attacking Kucinich (often in the most childish ways) or why they continue to ignore the reality that the majority of the citizens back impeachment remains a mystery .
6
POPSPolitics Trumps Democracy I find the last paragraph of this clip most puzzling. The writer claims that the Dems made a choice between their "liberal base" and a broader electorate. Don't these people realize that a majority of the citizens of the US favor an impeachment of Bush/Cheney? Just how myopic does Washington have to become before they reach for their glasses?

POPSTheocracy? Is This Good for America? Click on the link and view the embedded video to gain an awareness of the total wackiness of these people. Make no mistake about it, these people are intent on making this a Christian Nation. And if your "brand" of Christianity doesn't conform with what they deem appropriate you're as much on the outside as any non-believer. Maybe those depicted in the video are not of the Fred Phelps ilk, they are much more of a danger because of their numbers and organizational influence in politics. You've been warned!

POPSNostalgic Poster Admittedly outdated but still very relevant as it concerns the neocon view of religion and politics.
1
POPSSunlight on Propaganda As I've written before, "balanced" newscasting is not presenting extreme views from both sides and proclaiming the truth to lie somewhere in the middle. That is lazy newscasting. Real newscasting is finding out the facts with evidence to back them up and presenting that as the news.

POPSFear as a Natiional Position For some reason I've never bought into this fear thing. Living itself is risky. You could die today. Enjoy what you know. The future is but a fantasy and Now is the only reality we know. Make the most of it. Ninety-nine percent of politics today is fear powered. Especially on the Republican side. Free yourselves from this burden and live your lives now. It actually prepares you to face the inevitable challenges when they occur.
1
POPSFox Guards Henhouse The Legislature has again become invertebrate. These worms have bowed to politics over principle by allowing the AG to be the arbiter of privacy in this nation. Check and balances? Forget them. Oversight? Too much trouble. Stand up to the President/King? Too risky. As we bleat our way forward we have only ourselves to blame for keeping our mouths shut.
3
POPSOut of Iraq It's time to pressure Senators to start voting the will of the people and forget about politics. They need a backbone implant.
2
POPSPolitical Religiosity Losing Power? Dispensing with religion, it seems, would be an improvement in the political discussions in America today. I am fed up with politicians trying to "out-faith" each other. Let's talk about issues that matter to people and keep faith (or lack of faith) a personal matter. Unless, they attempt to force their fantasies on others, of course.
