POPSBegone Heathens!!! From the comments: "Quick question. Does "any form of mysticism are represented" mean Christianity too? Because one definition of mysticism, from wiki, is "(from the Greek μυστικός, mystikos, an initiate of a mystery religion) is the pursuit of communion with, identity with, or conscious awareness of an ultimate reality, divinity, spiritual truth, or God through direct experience, intuition, instinct or insight." If it doesn't include Christianity, does that mean that symbolically eating the flesh and drinking the blood of your God, lighting candles, praying to dead people, chanting, performing hour or two hour long ceremonies lead by a man or woman dressed in funny robes, forming small groups to discuss sacred texts, believing that the dead will rise, marking your forehead with ash and speaking in tongues is ok, else you are wiccan?"

POPS"Calm Down Little Lady" (cont) "Meteor Blades writes at Daily Kos about the passage of the Stupak-Pitts coat-hanger amendment: "Irrational." "Hypersensitive." "Overreacting." "Hysterical." Women recognize these words all too well. They're put-downs many of them have had thrown at them all their lives anytime they raise issues about their treatment in relationships, school, the workplace or society at large. These words and others of similar ilk have found their way into diaries and comments here at Daily Kos yesterday and today around the abomination known as the Stupak-Pitts Amendment. Calm down, little lady, is the tone. Get real. Be adults. Doncha know how politics really works?"

POPSYawn - Dinesh's Same Tired Dogma This guy never adds anything new to the conversation. The same tired arguments, over and over again. For those of you unfamiliar with this defender of the faith, he is a frequent columnist on the World Net Daily. The WND is notorious for such rational positions as backing the Birthers, Creationists, and Christian Nationalists. Dinesh's mainstays are straw men, claiming atheists are a dangerous "movement", and bashing liberals. One could compare him to Glenn Beck without a TV show.

POPSI Wonder If He Attended? Bruce goes on in his diatribe to quote mine after accusing atheist of this same activity. Well, what can you expect. He is the president of the Discovery Institute, that bastion of creation...er, Intelligent Design.
4
POPSWild Bill Rallies for the Vatican That bastion of logic, that paragon of rationality is spouting his dogma once again. Has anyone considered that he might be the forgotten twin of Karl Rove? Just wondering.

POPSIt's a movie, people! Since the first Potter movie came out there has been this ludicrous panic among some Christians that all their little darlings who view these movies will be recruited by the witch's cabal. And the insanity continues still!

POPSRatsinger Opens His Mouth Again Ratsy again shows his true colors and unleashes a diatribe against those who don't believe in his dogma. He mentions the tired argument about communism and Marxism as though these ideologies came about through the idea of atheism rather than an as attempt to set up a dictatorial and fascist form of government. I suspect his diatribe has more to do with the recent criticism of his dogma and falling church membership in Europe. Of course, he doesn't address the fact that the most violent and oppressive governments are also the most religious. He fails to recognize that the most successful European governments are the most secular.

POPSMisconceptions Like many concepts people hold, atheism is often viewed as a belief system filled with dogma and intent on pushing an "agenda". This article may help to dispel this false notion.

POPSWhat's the Difference? cont., Once it is understood that atheism is merely the absence of belief in any gods, it becomes evident that agnosticism is not, as many assume, a “third way” between atheism and theism. The presence of a belief in a god and the absence of a belief in a god exhaust all of the possibilities. Agnosticism is not about belief in god but about knowledge — it was coined originally to describe the position of a person who could not claim to know for sure if any gods exist or not.

POPSLOL! The religion of atheism??? St. Augustine is a beautiful town. With its massive oak trees and Spanish moss it is a charming and quintessential southern town. Yet at least one of their residents seems to be lacking in even basic logic and appears to be intent on merely apeing the same old canards of the ultra Religious Right. Well, at least they're consistent. I won't go into detail about the numerous fallacies presented in this article but will only say that this is typical of the "arguments" used by a certain portion of the population. The only comment I'll make on this is to point out that calling atheism a religion is analogous to calling bald a hair color.

POPSEthics and Morality Do right because it's the right thing to do - not for future gain. The best good deeds are done anonymously.

POPSRay "Banana" Comfort Strikes Again World Nut Daily never fails to deliver. This advert penned by the pooh-bah of irrationality would be hilarious if it weren't for the fact that there are a lot of pig ignorant (apology to pigs!) sheep out there ready to believe whatever this champion of the scientifically illiterate spews forth.
8
POPSMore Christian Persecution Once again we're witness to more outrage against Christian persecution. This time from that erudite philosopher of religion, Charlie Daniels. This'll get Joe Six Pack gnashing his teeth about those atheist Christ haters!

POPSPrayer to Remain - For Now A cornerstone for the incoming administration is the message of hope. This doesn't mean just for religious America but for all America.

POPSUnheard Voices I found it eye opening that a majority of self designated Christians chose not to adhere to the central tenant of their religion. What ever became of the "only through me..." part of Christian dogma. Even though I find the whole idea of an afterlife as nothing more than wishful thinking, the idea that a majority of Christians go against the central belief of their own sect is in it's own way, encouraging. I admit to some confusion when it comes to the sample that believes that atheists can also go to heaven. Evidently they are ignorant of the basic definition of atheism. It's unfortunate that this majority has been so hidden while the rabid right wing has garnered so much attention. But that is just the reality of the spotlight these days. If you buy the media's take on things, three atheists speak for the millions of unheard from atheists. Oh well...

POPSAd Campaign Fights Back I didn't miss the irony inherent in this story. The opening paragraph tags Dawkins as a "firebrand" yet the message struck me as a bit tepid, While definitionally correct (and some might even argue that point) the claim that there "probably" is no god struck me as a comment carefully chosen to cast the least amount of controversy. Tomato/tomahto...

POPSThe Seat of Bigotry Ms. Phillips evidently doesn't engage her brain before putting her mouth in motion. Her hate filled diatribe is more suited to the middle of the last century than today's reality. Unfortunately, her sentiment is rather common. If one substitutes Jew or Muslim or Black or any other non-Christian minority for atheist it immediately becomes apparent that she is a bigoted, angry person in search of a scapegoat. Given that near 85% of Americans are Christian, her blaming the 12% for all the problems society faces is ludicrous and is indicative of profound projection on her part. Her spew sounds like it was transcribed from a speech recorded in 1930s Germany, not 21st century America. Really sad.

POPSReligious Hate Speech The view from one of the believers. If you care to wade through this drivel you will be entertained by a multitude of false assertions, straw men, and arguments from ignorance. The depth of illogic is stunning. It's sad that many people who read this sort of crap swallow it as readily as they do the dogma behind it.

POPSAn Old Myth Investigated This clip is from a short piece explaining very well why, as Cline points out, freedom of and freedom from are two sides of the same coin. You can't have one without the other. Interested people might benefit from linking to the original and reading it in its entirety.

POPSA Bit of Rationalism It's always positive to point out what is myth and what is reality. Often they are confused, especially by people who depend so much on myth. The attached clip offers a bit of sunshine to brighten up those dark corners of peoples brains.
10
POPSTheistic Sanity It's not often that I agree with religious leaders but when I do it deserves to be pointed out. The point that Benedict makes of refuting the claim that evolution promotes atheism is of course correct. Although many, particularly in the States, believe otherwise. Unfortunately, the persons that fall into this category are also people that are the least informed on the subject.
5
POPSThe Boogey Man is Gonna Get Ya! According to the review of this new book it seems the author is rehashing the same old discounted arguments over what he dubs the "New Atheism". Using fear and misdirection it seems once again to be a weak attempt to defend the indefensible by a christian apologist.
9
POPSNo-no to Atheists Our friends across the pond seem to suffer the same sort of religious bigotry that we have here in the States. Of course, I suppose the question could be asked why employees are surfing the net instead of working but that's for another clip.
5
POPSFalse Premises I often come across people attempting to argue that atheism is some sort of a creed or even a religion. This clip touches on why this simply isn't the case. The article itself goes into much greater detail.

POPSCreationist Shows His Stuff Here's a pretty typical tirade by a fundamentalist Creationist that pretty much touches on all the points that Creationists get wrong all the time. About the only point he makes is that he's pretty ignorant about science and adheres to the talking points of the conservative right. My question is how many of these proselytizers will have to be proven wrong before they're eventually shamed into admitting that they've been lied to. The sad part is that many certainly have children who are also subjected to these ignorant views thus the ignorance is allowed to be passed along generational lines.

POPSPEW Survey Prompts Questions As I noted in a previous clip the PEW Survey claims that 1 in 5 atheists believes in god. I remarked at that time that this simply doesn't make sense. In this clip (and the appended comments) several people suggest reasons why this might have happened.
9
POPSFood for Thought One statistic that stood out to me was the strange 1 in 5 self professed atheists that claim to believe in God. Atheism is conventionally defined as holding no belief in a god or gods.
10
POPSScientific Framing - Do We Need It? Recently there's been a controversy in the scientific community concerning scientific framing. That's framing in the sense of presenting views and facts in such a way that they appeal to a larger percentage of the population. We hear this mostly in the political realm but it applies equally in the scientific realm particularly where science and politics intersect. Is it the right thing to do? Is it too Orwellian?
10
POPSFreedom for All Because of the nationwide special privilege that Christians have come to expect this type of discrimination is common place.
12
POPSFacts Do Matter For those Fundamentalists that insist that atheists choose not to believe so they can live a life of debauchery and decadence.

POPSA Rational Review One can hope that Ben Stein can now be laid to rest as a fraud, a liar, and a snake oil salesman. One would also hope that the mental health profession would lend their services and have counselors on hand after viewing this drivel to reintroduce the viewers gently back to reality.
