POPS"Hollywood Writers Strike: A Chance for Millions Online to Bloom"
This morning as I watched the morning news and learned that the strike will take place, I thought about this as an opportunity for online content producers. So it was great to see that Duncan Riley and the team at TechCrunch were already busy writing a post on exactly that story. As a media junkie, I like my rounded mix of traditional and non traditional channels but this strike just may (at least for now), encourage me to completely rely on online media for my daily dose of news, commentary and entertainment. For online content providers, this lucky break gives them an opportunity to serve up fresh content while major networks are forced to turn out reruns. This experience will illustrate how timely and nimble these new producers are. In any event, I do wish the best for the talented men and women who turn out my favorite content for the networks. How much do you follow traditional vs. online media and in wake of the strike, do you think your own media habits will change

POPSFuser: Out of the [In]box Technology For the sake of total transparency, I will say first that Fuser is a client of an agency that I work with. Beyond that, this new development is a tool that I will definitely use. I'm experiencing overload just with Outlook accounts; Throw in my Facebook and other social networking activity and its become nearly impossible to manage my mail... but Fuser definitely gives me hope. This mashup of everything the Web 2.0 innovators have set up over the past few years is a new model that I think we will be noticing a lot of in e-business.

POPSHow Much Will Advertisers Pay for a 1.5 Second Spot? I think this is absolutely an interesting and thought-provoking study in our post-broadcast, niche media world. "Life After the 30 Second Spot" (check out Joseph Jaffee's book on the subject) means media giants must work even harder to stay profitable and, indeed, desperate times sometime call for desperate studies. However optimistic and provocative, this study falls short because participants are actively engaged in TV and commercial viewing. They sit back, watch and report. However, today's TV viewer is not only fast forwarding the commercial, she is checking her email, downloading at iTunes and Skyping her pals during show breaks. Perhaps this type of environment was tested as well but I didn't see an indicatio of this in the report. Interested to know your thoughts- Should advertisers pay for your attention when you fast forward through their messages?

POPSSearch Mashup: Check out this new site. Check out www.symbaloo.com; Symbaloo must have a really great affiliate program with all of the featured content providers given search space on this site. In the coming days of the web, banner ads will remain but this ability to integrate advertising as an integral part of site content and functionality will change the way new sites monetize page space.

POPSWhy the iPhone will Change My Walk to Work I don't have much time between work, class and my telecommute work at night to casually browse the web from my home computer. I use my walk to work and my new blackberry to check out and stay current on my favorite sites. Although a dangerous habit for a pedestrian in a busy city, the ability to surf from my mobile saves me from falling out of the loop in my online communities. These new features of the iPhone, as smartly described by David Pogue promise to make my on-the-go browsing so much more enjoyable.

POPSNew Media Puts Increasing Pressure on Madison Ave A quick, interesting look at the pending shakeups of agency structure on Madison Ave. Recently commented on a need for change in the structure of traditional PR agencies as well. In the future, as we move more into the social media space, retainers will make more sense than traditional per-hour billing. Working in the space I have noticed how much research and time it takes to craft a campaign that respects the online communities we seek to engage and really working with the functionality of new sites to understand their utility for the client and the community using it. Per-hour billing, as Edelman stated, doesn't leave room for PR practitioners and clients to enter the space in a meaningful, lasting way.

POPS"Old-School" Media for a Mid-Market Brand It will be interesting to follow the development of this widget. I would be interested to know who is downloading and using the app. I thought it was worth mentioning as well that Adweek called JC Penny's new widget, "old-school." Also, I wondered why JC Penny's "core demographic" is women 25-55; seems like quite a broad "core" audience to be engaging.

POPSEdelman Leads Pioneer Thinking in New Media Space I have been really impressed by the entrepreneurial drive at Edelman to join the conversation on the web. A few slip-ups along the way (Wal-Mart bloggers and Vista Acer seeding) pales in comparison to Edelman's successful engagement in the new media space. It is commendable that an organization as large as Edelman has remained nimble and motivated enough to adapt to the times.
