POPSUS Will Deliberately Endanger Britains, If Torture Evidence Is Revealed “The United States must understand the importance of an independent judiciary, and that one democracy cannot tell another how to administer its legal system. We sincerely hope Foreign Secretary David Miliband’s fears are misplaced or, if not, that Secretary Clinton will see sense and withdraw this shocking threat to ordinary British people,” she added. Wake up, UK. As Henry Kissinger once stated, "the US has no friends, only interests."

POPSObama grants rendition permission to CIA UPDATE - NOT EXTRAORDINARY RENDTION PROGRAM: see Dulios comment, below, including: The extraordinary renditions program involved the operation of long-term detention facilities either by the CIA or by a cooperating host government together with the CIA, in which prisoners were held outside of the criminal justice system and otherwise unaccountable under law for extended periods of time. The earlier renditions program regularly involved snatching and removing targets for purposes of bringing them to justice by delivering them to a criminal justice system. It did not involve the operation of long-term detention facilities and it did not involve torture.

POPSDamnit! Why Didn't They Listen To Ron Paul!
Everywhere you look, big events are occurring in the global economy. Last week, the United Nations said that the dollar’s unique role as a global currency was at an end. Although China, Brazil, Russia and India have all called for a new economic system not based on the dollar, this is the first time that a multinational institution has suggested scrapping the greenback. Also last week, the U.S. administration was forced to ask Congress to raise the debt ceiling again—this time to over $12 trillion—a level that will be breached by October. On Friday, three more banks failed in the U.S., bringing the total to 92 this year. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. recently increased the number of problem banks on its watch list to 400—up from around 300 during the first quarter of the year. In Britain, last week, the World Economic Forum listed Britain’s economy as less stable than Peru’s. The world is awaking to the possibility that America and Britain face real collapse.

POPSThe Bushies Pre-emptively attack Michael Moore
Once again the Bushies have decided to preemptively attack Michael Moore over his new documentary, SICKO. This is a film about the lack of adequate health care in the richest country in the world; the United States of America. Understand, that there are certain things Michael Moore does and says that do not meet with my applause, but when he is right he is right. The U.S. should be embarrassed by its lack of health care for every citizen of the country, no matter what their financial situation. Health care is not a privilege, it is a right. This is especially true in a country as vastly wealthy as the U.S. It is criminal for tens of millions of people to be out of the loop for proper medical care. The Bushies and the conservative Republicans will say or do anything to scare the citizenry away from national health care. But just ask the people of Canada what they think of their system, even with the problems it faces. It is not perfect. But no one is left uncared for.

POPSAnd the rich get richer.... Irksome.... One of these days "We the People" might get pissed at the system we've allowed our representatives to create and vote to bring a little equality back to the country... Ironically, Gates and Buffett would probably support it....

POPSABC Leak Severely Damages War Effort I am reading an interesting book on the Mahattan Project and the Los Alamos Laboratory. Leaks such as this would have been dealt with severely, as they should be. I fault the Bush administration for not using the full war powers of the country in prosecuting these traitors.

POPSMedvedev: Ready To Respond If U.S. Ends Missile Plan "We hope to create frank and honest relations with the new administration and resolve problems that we were not able to resolve with the current administration," he said. Iran, Iraq, Russia, all have extended a hand of peace towards America. Obama had better not screw up this opportunity to make right some of all Bush's wrongs. As Bush once said: "Either you are with us, or you are against us." If America continues to choose to threaten the security of Europe with their paranoid evil plans, I will know for sure that America is the true enemy of the whole world. Russia are closer neighbours to us, than the US and I for one, (among many others here in Dk), trust them a hell of a lot more, than we'll ever trust America. Get Obama to stop the plans for the stupid paranoid damned missile shield. The ball is in America's court. I hope they play it wisely.

POPSSen. Shelby bids reality farewell on Sunday TV The Obama admin is "obviously" turning the USA into a socialist nation, he claims. OK, let's count the evidence: How many companies has the government taken over (of America's 26 million)? Um, one? General Motors? A few more if you count the ones with loans (which is a stretch)? And the banks that Bush bailed out. OK, let's grant them all and say ten. 10 of 26,000,000. And we're a socialist nation. One divided by 2,600,000, to express it in a percentage of total businesses. My, my. Sound the alarum! Break out the hammers and sickles! Or call the men in white coats.

POPSYou're Scaring Me, Obama: Let the Bush Years Die
And then there's Robert Gates, widely rumored to be staying on as your Defense Secretary. Questions about Gates' role in Iran-Contra, not to mention his skewing of intelligence about Russia, still linger. But especially disturbing is his recent push for beefing up the US nuclear arsenal: "As long as other nations have or seek nuclear weapons - and can potentially threaten us, our allies and friends - then we must have a deterrent capacity that makes it clear that challenging the United States in the nuclear arena, or with weapons of mass destruction, could result in an overwhelming, catastrophic response. While we're on the topic of warmongers in your midst. Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff? Yet another hawk, hell-bent on Iran and enamored with nuclear weapons. And now we've got Clinton as Secretary of State. Why is it that none of the 23 senators and 133 House Reps who voted against the war in Iraq are even on a short-list for these critical posts?

POPSUS Human Rights Violations Embolden Others To Act The Same
"Well, it’s very ironic, in fact, for the UN human rights machinery to feel compelled to be involved in a country that has very high human rights standards, at least a legal protection for human rights. I think the choice of the site in Guantanamo Bay was the first marker that there was an attempt by the US administration to manage the war on terror outside the legal framework. I mean, it was a deliberate attempt to shelter the actions of the administration from judicial scrutiny. From day one, this was my biggest concern. I think Americans and people all over the world have every reason to have confidence in US institutions when they are all engaged together. The system of governments has several branches, and in the field of human rights the judicial branch is probably the most important one. It’s the forum for protection, upholding of human rights law. So the signal that this entire war on terror would be fought outside the legal framework, I think, was extremely troublesome."

POPS"Court Declares Part of the Patriot Act 'Unconstitutional'" continues: Because of the ruling, the government will now be forced to justify individual gag orders before a court, instead of casually wielding the power of a blanket gag as the Bush administration has done since the blindingly fast passage of the Patriot Act in Oct. 2001.

POPSIs America Hooked on War?
When it comes to war (and peace), we live in a world of American Newspeak in which alternatives to a state of war are not only ever more unacceptable, but ever harder to imagine. War is now our permanent situation. It lacks, for instance, "victory." But achieving victory no longer seems to matter. War American-style is now conceptually unending, as are preparations for it. In a sense, the ongoing war system can't absorb victory. Any such endpoint might indeed prove to be a kind of defeat. Similarly drained of its traditional meaning has been the word "security". If we ever decided we were either secure enough, or more willing to live without the unreachable idea of total security, the American way of war and the national security state would lose much of their meaning. In other words, in our world, security is insecurity. And peace itself? Simply put, there's no money in it. America's true religion and addiction, is force. Americans are --always--marching as to war.

Will your admin. attempt to utilize the millions of acres available for solar energy collection?" POPSC.I.A. Destroyed tapes despite court orders It's no surprise that the CIA destroyed any 'evidence' of torture, but they were a bit late, the news was already out. Do they really think no-one else managed to get a copy? They may be able to discredit the detainees stories in the mainstream media, but people are starting to find the grape vine far more reliable.

POPSSix Days Left To Save The Whales! This is really important! Please help. Time is of the essence. With only six days to respond, we're counting on you -- and those you know -- to help deluge the administration with a tidal wave of outrage at this dangerous proposal. The U.S. Navy won't take NO for an answer. It's bringing back a sonar system so powerful it can impact whales 300 miles away with its ear-splitting noise. Its effects are so far-reaching -- and so unknown -- it could threaten the survival of entire populations of marine mammals. Now the Navy wants to deploy this Low- Frequency Active (LFA) sonar system across a staggering 70 percent of the world's oceans. And the Bush Administration has given the public only 15 days to register our opposition. LFA sonar can deafen, maim and kill whales. But scientists are even more alarmed at its potential impacts on whale migration, feeding, mating and communication -- in other words, the biological keys to the survival of whale species.

POPS"Miracle Cure For Alzheimer's Disease?"
continues: The new study documents a dramatic and unprecedented therapeutic effect in an Alzheimer's patient: improvement within minutes following delivery of perispinal etanercept, which is etanercept given by injection in the spine. Etanercept (trade name Enbrel) binds and inactivates excess TNF. Etanercept is FDA approved to treat a number of immune-mediated disorders and is used off label in the study. Griffin and Mark are pioneers in the field of neuroinflammation. Griffin published a landmark study in 1989 describing the association of cytokine overexpression in the brain and Alzheimer's disease. "It is unprecedented that we can see cognitive and behavioral improvement in a patient with established dementia within minutes of therapeutic intervention," said Griffin. "It is imperative that the medical and scientific communities immediately undertake to further investigate and characterize the physiologic mechanisms involved. This gives all of us in Alzheimer's research a tre

POPSWhile terrorists plot, the FAA parties I saw some undercover clips of the partying on Fox and heard this story. This all says a lot about the current culture and seriousness in the minds of those who are paid (nicely) to see that our citizens are safe while they fly in our skies. Forget the parties, the bonuses for CEOs and "managers"; instead let's pay the scanners, the mechanics, and builders of our planes what they're really worth.

POPSCorporate Medicine Is Bad Medicine
71% of physicians believe managed care compromises patient care. 80% of Americans believe profit considerations compromise quality of care. The Health Care Finance Administration calculates that the United States would save enough money administering our health care system through a single payer to provide health care for the 44 million uninsured, while avoiding managed care and allowing free choice of providers. The result of this government-business agreement is that corporations make large profits, recipients get poorer care, for-profits appear to be able to offer services for less than the private sector, and politicians can claim they are saving money by "privatizing" (read "corporatizing"). This serves politicians and corporations, but people pay the price. The root ethical problem with corporate medicine is its abandonment of the ethos of traditional medicine, in which the needs of the patient are placed above the needs of the caregiver, in favor of an ethos of profit.
