More: When sugar water was substituted for the saccharin solution, the results were the same, researchers said. "Intense sweetness is more rewarding to the rats than cocaine," said coauthor Magalie Lenoir of the University of Bordeaux in France. Lenoir said mammalian taste receptors evolved in an environment that lacked sugar and so were not adapted to the high concentrations of sweets found in the modern diet. Excess sugar could increase levels of the brain chemical dopamine, she said, leading to a craving for sweets.

A glass of water can be hard to come by...
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  12-9-2009
We're all aware of it, yet most of us continue to forget and take for granted that a glass of water is something that so many people in the world don't have access to. If you're reading this, then you're on a computer and you have internet access, so this likely isn't an issue for you. But for so many others, something we consider so basic is perhaps their greatest challenge. I tip my hat to Alyssa Milano for again reminding people to be grateful and to help those who aren't as lucky.

How to eat to best fuel exercise
    Lexica
    by Lexica  7-9-2009    1
More: Post exercise…eat something within 15 minutes…the enzymes that help the body re-synthesize muscle glycogen are really most active in that first 15 minutes. The longer we wait to eat something, the longer it takes to recover…to prevent that delayed-onset muscle soreness, refueling is part of it… How we drink can make a difference in how optimally we hydrate our body. A lot of people sip liquids, but gulping is better. Gulps of fluid leave the stomach more rapidly. It’s important to do this. It seems counterintuitive, it seems like gulping would cause a cramp. People are more likely to have stomach cramps sipping because fluid stays in their gut too long. When you take…gulps as opposed to sips, you have a greater volume of fluid in the stomach. That stimulates the activity of the stretch receptors in the stomach, which then increase intra-gastric pressure and promote faster emptying. This is why gulping is preferred.

    Religion vs Science
    lifecyce1898

"Is God good?" "Er... Yes." "Is Satan good?" "No." "Where does Satan come from?" The student falters. "From... God..." "That's right. God made Satan, didn't he?" The elderly man runs his bony fingers through his thinning hair and turns to the smirking, student audience."I think we're going to have a lot of fun this semester, ladies and gentlemen." He turns back to the Christian. "Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?" "Yes, sir." "Evil's everywhere, isn't it? Did God make everything?" "Yes." "Who created evil? "Is there sickness in this world? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness. All the terrible things - do they exist in this world? " The student squirms on his feet. "Yes." "Who created them? " The professor suddenly shouts at his student. "WHO CREATED THEM? TELL ME, PLEASE!" The professor closes in for the kill and climbs into the Christian's face. In a still small voice: "God created all evil, didn't He, son?"

Dry martini – the king of cocktails
    Lexica
    by Lexica  5-2-2009    2
To reiterate, a martini is gin and vermouth . More: My Favorite Version (also called the Crisp Cocktail): • 1 ½ oz. Tanqueray 10 Gin • 1 ½ oz. Dolin Dry Vermouth • 1 dash Orange Bitters Combine ingredients in pre-chilled mixing glass. Add ice--lots of it. Stir gently but with purpose. Thirty strokes, taste. Continue until diluted sufficiently that the drink is still pungent and oily. Strain in to chilled cocktail glass. Cut a 1 ¼" circle from an orange rind. Spray zest on top of Martini and discard. Add lemon twist.

"White Guilt" Politics of Obama Crowd Undermined
    merrie

and then morphed that into the Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist) which earned him an invitation to sip tea with Chinese stalinists in Beijing in 1977. The Chinese were the originators of the idea that the rural third world south was being exploited by the urban developed world north. Klonsky fondly reminisced about his authoritarian left activities here in November 2007 stopping only to "repent" for his sectarianism while celebrating that he is now back together with former SDS comrades in "one movement." Now Klonsky blogs for the Obama campaign website on education policy and "social justice teaching." How is it under that bus, Comrade Klonsky? Mike Klonsky, former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers' longtime comrade-in-arms from their days in SDS to the Chicago School Wars they fought in the 80s and 90s alongside Barack Obama, and presto he's gone. http://globallabor.blogspot.com/2008/06/how-is-it-under-that-bus-comrade.html

Every sip you take: Singer Sting is selling wine
    JediKnut
    by JediKnut  3-19-2009
"I also wanted to use agriculture with practices that would nourish the land and not deplete the land and so we went to traditional methods with farming, we got rid of pesticides, we shunned monoculture, and it works, the farm is also a garden," he said in the remarks broadcast by local television Rtv38. Rossi did not reveal the name of the upcoming wine. He said it will be a 2007 vintage based on the Sangiovese grape, with a touch of Cabernet and Merlot. A 2008 Chianti could also go on sale in the fall, but tests on the wine's aging must be conducted before a decision is made, Rossi told The Associated Press by telephone. The wine, along with other products made on the Sting farm, will also be available at a shop on the property that the singer will inaugurate by June, Rossi said.
