As a young woman, I didn't venture much outside the heterosexual role that filled the expectations of others because the price of social discomfort and family rejection was so high that I was unwilling to pay it. In the perceived absence of another choice and the perceived threat of loss of acceptance by my community, I felt pressure to marry a man. It was just what people did. I'm very lucky in this respect though... since coming out at 18 I haven't experienced any of the hardships other gay folk do with family and friends, or in the work place. It's been all easy breezy for me Had I come out in high school though, that would have been a different story as I was already unpopular enough, haha.
