This month Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa challenged the West to
match Chinese investment in his country. Mwanawasa said Zambia welcomes
Chinese investment, credit and loans despite unease in the West over
the fast pace of Chinese-African investment. "Those who oppose Chinese
investment ... all they need to do is to equal the help we are getting
from China. We only turned to the East when you people in the West let
us down," Mwanawasa told Reuters on the sidelines of an African
business forum. China has increased its planned investment to $900
million in the Zambia’s mineral-rich Copperbelt industrial hub over the
next four years.

No offense, communist and TheCatWhisperer, did either of you actually bother to read the clip or the original article before posting a knee-jerk reply? The column is critical of the Western attitude, it does not seek "to blame China for our woes." If anything, the implication is that the West should follow China's example. Unbelievable.

Cheaper Chinese imports are all but wiping out South Africa's textile and clothing industries. This huge 'beast' has awoken and is hungry for the worlds' mineral resources. Doesn't China buy up most of Venezuela's oil?

I agree that the U.S./West is not alone in its careening infatuation with globalization. China is our complicit partner. Effectively responding to our biddings for cheaper and cheaper stuff. I hope we see greater numbers of China's citizenry standing up and promoting more durable economics there as we are seeing here in the U.S. and elsewhere. The benefits of more sustainable economic values are promising. Values such as those that place a greater emphasis on industry that first serves local needs -- and greater value placed on the quality of the lives of human beings. These priorities certainly create less capital for investors, yet they create greater community wealth. This kind of ...
