I do believe there is no such thing as free will, and contrary to what the humor intends, that belief does not lead to apathy!
Of course, it's possible free will exists, but whether it does or not is really not relevant.
Once I discovered the reasons that free will is an illusion (I do have reasons for my belief) I very naturally, I think, tried to become passive and let the ride carry me instead of me pretend to control the ride. I quickly discovered that this was no fun at all, nor was it possible for me to be passive as I imagined I was trying to do. (For to do that is the experience Zen seeks to actualize, and I'm not going to awaken just because I realize the universe is spontaneous i...

We need the concept of free will in our attempt to understand universal laws. But first and foremost we need to understand ourselfs and if we think we are free to act we are probably more couragous. For years I have been practicing zen and it made it easier for me to understand the relativity of my life.
The church of apathy is a satire, and this poste is for entertainment only.

Actually one of the reasons I went to the link was because of the tag 'black humor'.
My favorite movie if I have to name one is 'Very Bad Things" (1998). It has near 100% perfect edge, nonstop humor in the quantity of a 3 Stooges film or cartoon, but content far above the pratfalls level.
Plus for me it has a genuine moral and intellectual reach into meaningfulness especially demonstrated in the scene where the body is prayed over out there in the desert during the burial scene.
If you have not seen it, I can recommend it extremely highly.
Anyway I know it was humor, but I love humor and I love serious thought.
I not sure what you mean by Zen enabling you to see your life more relatively...

To answer your question about Zen and relativation: every time I find myself too close to my ego, I take a step back, do some breathing exercises and get conneted with my true self, as opposite to my ego. Do the things you enjoy and you are good at. Do I make any sense?
I maybe could explain it in german but it comes down to: every human has a certain, preset function in this live and happiness comes from fullfilling this function. In practice this means; do some breathing-exercises, some yoga, listen to some relaxing music(Ottmar Liebert) and get in harmony with your true self.
Of course before one can achive the inner peace, one has to have some expierence...getting comlipcated, age, lifes...

Thanks for your reply.
Being able to have the ability to consciously step back and gain a perspective is a great ability.
No German here language skills here.
Say, I maybe shouldn't ask this, but you are in the neighborhood, near France.
I came across a news piece today about Sarkozy's Holocaust proposal, what do people in your area think of his performance.
I wonder what would happen if American children were forced to adopt a dead American child to preserve their memory? Now that would be an uproar to make a black comedy about.
I'm just thinking out loud here, so don't worry about trying to answer this question. I think too much.

...forced to adopt a dead American INDIAN child to preserve their memory?
I got my own line wrong, alas.

Luckily I'm not near France, I live in Holland which might seem close enough for Americans but here every country differs from another.
Sarkozy is a dangerous little man. Kids should be taught how to study individually. Every kid should be able to read by the age of 6, because knowledge means practically to read a lot and to be able to find where it's written down. I guess Sarkozy wants everybody ignorant; instead of learning, he wants them to pray because believing is not knowing.
Adopting a dead child, Indian, African, Asian, whatever would indeed make a great story. Black comedy but more likely a horror story.

OK, you bet, I am the guilty American here; that is I knew you listed Amsterdam as your home base and I DID think of it as close. Of course it is not logical really for me to assume that; much more than distance can affect closeness.
I was intrigued by your 'name' sitegeist' and typed it into Google to see what it meant, thinking it an action or something, rather than a proper name. There is a lot of sitegeist to be found on the Internet. A LA Times writer has the word in small letters in the top left corner of his Internet Essays for the paper.
It suggested Zeitgeist and taking a one layered approach, I will take geist as spirit and site as location and get a place of spiritual encounter. ...
