Some of the projects are small, new and exploratory -- such as solar and tidal power. Giant wind turbines began spinning in 2001 and provide close to 1 percent of the state's energy. Biomass power, mainly from lumber mills and pulp and paper companies, date as far back as the 1950s, but the energy is often consumed by the industries generating it. Geothermal power is not yet on the map thanks to challenges with technology and costs.
