"To see a perfectly streamlined great white slowly cruising in clear water with shafts of light bouncing off its back is like watching a sports car effortlessly cruise past you on the freeway. It is just one of those moments that makes you appreciate a beautiful creation."

incredible; thanks for sharing this one! There's a video I recently viewed with two men in a submersible off the coast of Moloka'i when a 6-gill shark, at an estimated 17ft, swam within a few feet of the sub. The video is here: http://scienceblogs.com/deepseanews/2008/02/a_meter_wide_shark_head_with_a.php

the size of that shark puts Jaws to shame! (apologies in advance if you've already seen this)

Yeh, that six-fin is a big one. I lived across the channel from Moloka'i on Maui for 25 years, so that
video made me home-sick. The more common sharks
are tigers and sand sharks, which usually come near
the shoreline morning and evening.
What a cool job, marine research. Thanks again
The following is a post from the web-site.

Wow - this is way cool. I'll admit it: there is no way that I would ever go underwater, but it sure is amazing to see this sort of stuff from the safety of dry land

And here's what I learned about the Six-Gill Shark:

The sixgill shark, or Hexanchus griseus, is a common species of deep water shark. It is also one of the largest sharks that feed o...

I stand to be corrected, but I think it's only off the South African coast that the great whites breach the water. Magnificent photos. Tks.

I believe you're correct, as I had heard that the Great
White's use that breaching technique only on the
South African coast.
Really awesome photo's! Glad you appreciate them and
hope conservationists can save them from extinction!

The movie Jaws ruined the water for me for many years - even in lakes and swimming pools I was on the lookout for dorsal fins!

I got it! The famous movie line! The clip from the movie
was on the news report about Roy Scheider's death.

Its true what Michelle says only the South African GW sharks breach, but all GW's have the ability, in a Doccie I watched recently; they coaxed Califonian GWs and I think ones located in India and the all breach, even though reluctantly .

When GW's are given incentives to do so, they're more motivated. In the wild, they adapt to their environment,
and the seals may breach, too. [just a wild guess]
There's a type of crow in Tokyo that sits on the overhead
cables and drops nuts on the street. After the nuts are
crushed by cars tires, the birds cautiously retrieve their snack once the coast is clear. That's pretty clever.

I have forever loved these pictures. This is one spectacular animal. I am scared to death to ever find one face to face --and yet I can't wait to see a live one.

Behind a very thick steel wall or glass, of course.

I wonder how it feels to be that seal.

Maybe its like bungee jumping

They are beautiful creatures! I don't know what I would do if I come across one while scuba diving though. I think I would be scared.
