abailart says: Beneath the binary hatreds of commentators, much work goes on between those Palestinians and Israelis who reject the imposed two-state solution. To be sure, Palestinians and Israelis would not simply be able to take the new South Africa as a blueprint. They would have to work out their own distinct constitution, including mechanisms for ethnic communities to have autonomy in matters that concern them, and to guarantee that no one group can dominate another. There would be hard work to heal the terrible wounds of the past. Such a solution offers the chance that Palestine-Israel could become for the first time ever the truly safe home where Israelis and Palestinians can accept each other. It may be an arduous path, but in the current impasse we cannot afford to ignore any ray of light. I cannot see how South Africa could be the basis of a blueprint for a one state solution. In South Africa the large black population needed the Whites to remain to ensure no capital drain where as the Whites didn't always have an alternative country. None of these apply to a one state. I'd wish it were different. I would say that just the disputes over water rights alone would make any resolution nearly impossible! I've found a good site written my a very fair-minded Jew What lessons can be learned from Northern Ireland? Is Israel a settler colony like South Africa? ...and more @righthand. Thx.
