Excellent. Those who live this way have more in common with Jesus than many who claim to be "born again." Number 11 might be along the lines of "do good when no one is around or will ever find out". That, of course, includes imaginary deities. Wonderful! Brilliant. Doing good for no reason than doing good, without praise or reward, suffering hardship in the process, making sacrifice, being despised and mocked sometimes, living a life against the grain of a culture dominated by bitter hatred and fearful selfishness. What a revolutionary, absurd and wonderful idea. Exactly Abailart. Doing good for goodness' sake. Great "Commandments". No god required. I do think that as a slogan, something like 'do good for its own sake' is pretty weak. What I like about the clip is that it gets into the heart of what 'doing good' actually can involve. What's involved points to something good way beyond myriad surface conceptions of goodness. I do think that as a slogan, something like 'do good for its own sake' is pretty weak.Taken in context this simple sentiment is actually very precise and strong. One can argue that a large slice of society only does good because of the "carrot/stick" motivation. There is enough evidence that doing good, i.e. acting along the principles of the "golden rule", being empathetic towards others because of no other reason than it is the right thing to do, is both noble and liberating. I think that asking 'what is the good?' remains an important question with no easy answers. Principia Ethica. |
