So he may gotten his revenge in the way an artist can, in his work. I saw this in wikki and thought it was funny. Especially the Pope's reply. A censorship campaign (known as the "Fig-Leaf Campaign") was organized by Carafa and Monsignor Sernini (Mantua's ambassador) to remove the frescoe (Of the last Judgement). When the Pope's own Master of Ceremonies, Biagio da Cesena, said "it was mostly disgraceful that in so sacred a place there should have been depicted all those nude figures, exposing themselves so sha... I wouldn't call it a code. Perhaps artistic licence. The pope had to expressly approve the artwork? I'm not sure that was possible, besides did the Pope speak Hebrew? Michaelangelo didn't want to do the painting. He was a sculptor. He thought the scale was too big. I'm sure Michaelangelo would have had what he thought were the wishes of God in mind when he painted. Feeling God created the Art, while he held the brush that painted. The Pope certainly didn't help much. |
