Lipoic acid is an organosulfur compound, one enantiomer of which is an essential cofactor for many enzyme complexes. This yellow solid is a carboxylic acid and features a cyclic disulfide, or ditholane ring, functional group. The R-enantiomer is biosynthesized and used as a cofactor. It is essential for aerobic life and is a common and sometimes controversial dietary supplement. It is usually called "lipoic acid," but this is not the form it takes in life. dihydrolipoic acid is the reduced form which is mostly how the sulfurs exist intracellularly. Good news then or bad for you Ratcatcher? I've marked it for to return to as I found the video difficult to comprehend. I don't know enough to answer your good question. Keep on asking the hard questions. The energy bit intrigued me, but he too seemed not to know the answers to questions that were essential to his subject. I'd appreciate further direction, too. The important thing to remember is that despite what some people might try to tell you, our bodies do not need antioxidants. Our bodies have perfectly adequate processes for antioxidizing themselves. However, if these supplements help with certain conditions, especially in conjunction with other medications/treatments, then they need to be examined. It may not necessarily be the antioxidant nature of lipoic acid that causes these results, even. Having a varied and well-rounded diet that includes foods from all the major food groups will usually give you all of those types of chemicals that you need to stay healthy, so supplements are only necessary if you aren't eating healthy. Note... The problem today is that even when we eat a well balanced diet these days we are not sure of receiving all the essential vitamins and other elements due to the manipulation of our food!! This thing about GM food being better for example..... And it seems there is a lot more of that in America than Europe (continents). I've read studies that show the nutrient level of the foods today is much lower than 100 years ago, mostly due to centralized farming, which causes soil depletion, loss of nutrients during transport, ect. I've also read that enzymes necessary to absorb the nutrients in food are sorely missing or depleted over time as we age. So to say we can get it all from our food is the ideal but perhaps not today's reality. I have auto-immune disease and have found taking enzyme supplements and juicing of organic and locally grown fruits and vegetables to greatly enhance my health as I refuse to take synthetic pharmaceuticals. I may add ALA for a boost! Thanks brightlight. Soil depletion is being dealt with here in Cordoba by composting our organic waste at the Municipal dump (we separate our trash) and used on farmland, something that I think may well help other countries too. We also recycle paper, batteries, glass and PC materials. Glad this can help Debs Be careful about turning your back on "synthetic pharmaceuticals", Deb. Some of those might just be exactly what you need most for some conditions. Natural isn't always better. Most importantly, though, if you're supplementing your diet, it is very important to consult a doctor and/or pharmacist in doing so. Those people are professionals in dealing with using chemicals — both natural and synthetic — to boost your health, and unlike most "Natural Supplement Experts", doctors and pharmacists actually have extensive, specific training in what chemicals/supplements can cause negative effects in your bodies; especially when combined with other drugs/supplements. Certain supplements/natural prod... darkeforce-would rather call you lightforce-thanks for taking the time. You're right-- I shouldn't have said refuse as in never. It's always best for each individual to work together with a doctor they trust. (I finally found one.) You can never be too educated about your health. If you're taking time to learn from the professionals, and getting second opinions from equally-qualified professionals, then you're on the right path. Many doctors do recommend natural supplements, and working with pharmacists, they can ensure that you get the maximum benefit from any drugs/supplements with the minimum of side effects. |
