Not to mention the intentions and current actions of neighbouring states and the ethnic/political groupings that spill over national borders.

The lesson was that the likely post war situation was grossly misjudged. Had relative peace and calm been the order of the day after the overthrow of Saddam then reconstruction and self governance would undoubtedly be a total different picture than it is in the present climate of chaos and confusion.

The country needs to be divided into four provinces, Kurd, Shia, Sunni, Others with the wealth of oil shared equally.
IMO this HAS to be the starting point of stabilising the country as a whole, from which in the future they (the Iraqi's) will be able to decide for themselves whether they wish to keep it as such, or re-unite back into a single unit.
