wildcat says: There is a lot we can learn from the brain and it can tell us where the Internet is headed next. There’s nothing magical in the brain (at least that we’ve found thus far), and yet it delivers all our mental capabilities, and emotional ones as well – that’s a very intriguing thought. After all, just as there is no particular reason for this lump inside our heads to appreciate fine wines and music, cry, laugh, reason, love, daydream, and aspire to greater things, there is no reason why silicon or some other fundamental substance (maybe even carbon some day), could not be coaxed into creating something similar. What is the internet - electricity?, Waveforms?, Time?(Duration), Bits?... Is it a substance?, Thoughts?, Actions?, ... It exists in the universe so it IS part of the universe. But what part? Is it quantum? It resembles a brain but does the internet truly think? Is it an entity. I see the internet as a conglomeration of human thoughts being activated by keystrokes and mouse clicks. The internet is the sum of human brains being thrown together in a medium. A great encyclopedia of the human mind worldwide. Facts, conjecture, fantasies and creations all mixed into a superhighway of the human condition. It is an evolution of the human species. When the next great human evolution happens hopefu... Some sort of joke, right? how do you mean ab? I should say I have an interest in complexity, AI and neuroscience, and am all for productive power of analogies and metaphors. "It's LIFE Jim, but not as we Know it " Mr Spock 'Neuromind Delusion' ? The net is an information storage/sorting medium activated by collaborating/evaluating individuals operating their own software storage(s) and evolving opinions, techniques and societal organization. Idea exchange and processing has never had such a proliferation and kick start. Expecting static evaluation to be relevant in such a roiling environment of interacting abilities does not impress me as astute. I'd like to hear more about these 'conceptual errors.' Thinking big is much more likely to come up with foresight of possibilities than reflex retreat to our imperfect models of 'reality'. A large part of the failure of military strategy is obsolescence : which is wh... The internet is like a brain in many ways. That's a long way from saying it IS a brain. The article says of the brain "it delivers all our mental capabilities, and emotional ones as well " which suggests either it relays them from somewhere or is the source of them. Either view is open to debate! In particular, whatever is meant by saying that the brain 'delivers' emotions is at odds with any human science which sees the body as the source of emotions, or any philosophy, which is most philosophy, which goes beyond seeing consciousness and mind as discrete, metaphysical essences somehow generated by the biological brain. Nevertheless, the point about analysis of what are rightly recognised a... |
