I've seen those boxes for sale a few years ago. Square watermelons were a real fad. You could even get forms to put over cucumbers to make faces.

$82? Unless the seeds are gold...no thanks! But the idea is quite brilliant! I can't tell you how many times I've had to clean up watermelon guts off my floor from a rogue melon taking a suicide leap off my fridge shelf......

Farmers in the southern Japanese town of Zentsuji have figured out how to grow their watermelons so they turn out square.

The square boxes are the exact dimensions of Japanese refrigerators, allowing full-grown watermelons to fit conveniently and precisely onto refrigerator shelves.
