BartendingBear says: These 10 Myths of Atheism are well countered by the 10 Truths offered in answer to them in this article. Forgive my stupidity but what is the golden rule? "Atheism is responsible for the greatest crimes in human history." This will be one of the biggest jokes i have read.... Most of the statements made here about Atheists don't even merit a defence.... I completely agree with tchk4123. On the contrary, religion is responsible for the greatest crimes in history - September 11th would never have happened if the Muslims weren't religious. "Atheism has no connection to science." . . . and any other religion does? That must be the most absurd thing I have ever read. Believeing in God means you think He created everything. Atheism, on the contrary, means there is another answer for life, the universe, and everything other than some supreme being who created it all. Atheist find rational ways to explain the existance of the universe which are related to scientific fact. I don't think that "Atheism is responsible for the greatest crimes in human history." But, also, I can't agree with "Atheist find rational ways to explain the existance of the universe". They pretend to, they just speculate, 'cuz science is speculation. Science "explains" life using the coacervates theory, which tells us that *somehow* the coacervates just got their proteines lined up in a way to become life forms. So, had the first life form power to multiply itself? They'll tell you something like this: "billions of years were necessary to... bla bla bla". Speculation. This is a poor theory, it's not well explained, but peaple belive it without having proves, with their "faith" in science. These are only the myths, folks. The clipping limit prevented me from adding the counter-argument truths. As I say in my original clipping comment, they are well countered by the 10 truths in the complete article as published. They are, however, what people voted for and said in the polls, not the truths... Kinda sad, actually. At least three of the absolute nicest, smartest, and most level-headed people I know are atheistic and/or agnostic. Even the meaning of the word Atheism has changed over time. If you don't believe me you can look it up. Without wanting to sound pretentious, I have no belief -- and no time, either -- for such things as deities and such like, but I'm not an atheist, either. I've see too much to be put into any one box... IMHO, when I see that a Creationist or Intelligent Design whack-job trying to explain their pet belief system, I know damn well humans evolved from apes - just some are not as far along as others. "The Man" is an atheist. Both religion and science (the atheist's replacement for religion) have had a checkered history. We know religion's problems well, but remember that there's plenty of pseudo science and plenty of atrocities done in the name of science throughout history. Historian Paul Johnson, in Modern Times, notes that over 200 million people in the 20th century were killed by those seeking to reorganize society via a scientific worldview - from Hitler and Mengele to Stalin to Mao. (A good number of these were clearly atheists.) Science can be abused and so can religion. Ideas don't kill people. People kill people. For clauzech: The Golden Rule is "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." Or, "Treat people the way you want to be treated." It is a paraphrase of Jesus' words in Matthew 7:12 & Luke 6:31, and he was in turn paraphrasing the Jewish Torah. It is a concept found in most if not all religions, theistic or not. Wikipedia has an interesting article that compares the concept in various religions. Some time ago an American senitor was being interviewed on Australian Radio and the subject was dishonesty. He (the senitor) stated that dishonesty was important as, if we have honesty it allows the Adolf Hitlers of this world can take over. Question so the Holocaust was just an honest man doing a days work???? So if this is true, "atheism" had nothing to do with it see. Super Sheep please read the article point number 6, "When scientists don't know something — like why the universe came into being or how the first self-replicating molecules formed — they admit it. Pretending to know things one doesn't know is a profound liability in science. And yet it is the life-blood of faith-based religion." it's a theory established attempting to explain things based on evidence science has discovered, it could be wrong, no one knows as of now, if science comes up with new evidence that disproves this theory, people will accept as for those who blindly believe in things without proofs, they aren't scientific at all, and you can't exactly have "faith" in science, be... If it wasn't for human ignorance Science would have completely replaced religon centurys ago. Science is based on experimentation and investigation. Yes it is sometimes wrong, but at least it admits it. Religon is based solely on books written by the hand of man 000's of years ago. No one knows for sure who wrote them or what their motives were. Basing you enitre life and beliefs on such information is not very reliable. Think about it if you were about 10,000 years ago and someone askend you how the earth came about, what would you say? Well now thanks to science we know better, but some people are too narrowminded to realise it. I have saved that excellent article about the myths so commonly held about atheists, of which I am one, of course. On a personal level, the only people who have ever made my life miserable were Christians. Never in history has any other myth created such tyranny, oppression and mass murder on such a huge scale as the belief in a mythical Jesus and a vengeful (or loving, depending on the current fad) god. |
