Why is marriage idolized? I blame fairy tales and romance movies. It's the happily-ever-after people are looking for. There's no such thing.

The Cinderella complex for women, we are told as children that a "Prince" will come along and save us from poverty and make us happy. All myths someone needs to tell the truth about, not all is heaven nor all is hell but sheer tolerance and understanding, no magic spells!!

I wonder why the gays are wanting to get married?

From my observations, most marriages now are just a legal document, a piece of paper. After living together before getting married, the luster is already gone. It is no longer a life time commitment, but just something new to try out and, like Sears, if you are not satisfied, "get your money back".

Since you're obviously aren't paying attention, a marriage is a legal partnership that gives the partners certain rights concerning the partners, any children and property owned which unmarried people don't get. Gay people just want to be treated like everyone else, and have the ability to attain those contractual rights. Otherwise, they're being barred from having full access to their partner and/or children when they are in hospital, they are not given automatic inheritance rights when one member dies, and many other rights that they are currently being deprived of.

If the religious want marriage to be reserved only for the people their demented dogma says should be allowed to marry, then...

Dead right Dark marriage has always been that way since the beginning, people married to unite powerful families and create peace between warring countries and dowries were given to entice husbands. Why should gay people be excluded from the legal rights that are given by marriage? Having said that, in Spain we have "pareja por derecho" where a couple who have lived together for a period of time and declare it, have the same legal rights as a married couple. My daughter, who doesn't believe in marriage has done this with her boyfriend..

Lot of people over 35 get married out of desperation and/or drunkiness or drug induced lunacy
