Conservatives are all over this photo. Not because the first lady is promoting volunteerism by actually doing rather than talking, but because someone in line has a cell phone.

The assumptions are: 1-the homeless cannot possibly afford a cell phone, 2-this man is homeless yet owns an expensive cell phone with all the bells and whistles and is therefore cheating the ‘system’.

This article answers these assumptions very well by debunking common misconceptions many of us have of the homeless and poor.

Those conservatives we most often hear from (the ones yelling the loudest) have jobs (paying much more than minimum wage), a comfortable home to go to after their job, drive a well-maintained vehicle, enjoy all the trappings that money provides, and generally are out of touch with the majority of working class people.

From the article: “you'd have to be a magician to stretch a minimum-wage job to cover housing, transportation, food, healthcare, childcare and other incidental expe

I think what the First Lady is doing is very admirable. More people should follow her example. I used to volunteer at the local food bank until a medical condition forced me to quit.

I wonder why proving there is something wrong with poor people is a conservative obsession.

How else can a homeless person hope to hear about a job without a cell phone?

Homeless doesn't nessicarily mean worthless.

Perhaps the guy with the phone is another volunteer or the pastor that runs the place.

I read a short story by TC boyle, about a homeless guy. In one day (or maybe more) lost his job and then was kicked out of his home by his girlfriend.

Really gritty story. Illustrated how quick you can become homeless.

But, I still want to know where he got that Cell Phone. I think Oprah should interview him!

I think the media should make a circus out of this story.

How does a picture of a man with a phone constitute his condition as homeless?
Unless there is an interview nobody can really tell?
Perhaps he is a reporter, A passerby jumping on an oppourtunity, A part of staff.

Even if he is homeless it only shows how little is known about the condition. Poverty is NOT THE ONLY REASON a person can be homeless.
However, This clip response is proof that clippers can be CLUELESS

I guess it is easy when you are first lady to look like you care by dishing out 3 bowls of soup for a photo op. Yet, while in private life and earning six and seven figures, they never felt the need to give any significant amount of money to charity. The same with Joe Biden. They both gave about 1 or 2% of their incomes. These are wealthy misers. Meanwhile conservatives, most of whom hold to Christian values, serve their communities, tithe, and give vast amounts of money to charities that do work all over the world.

I guess it is also easy to say:
I wonder why proving there is something wrong with poor people is a conservative obsession.
...when you are on the side of those ...

Why does everyone have to look for the negative in EVERYTHING? I am so tired of it. Why can't we just go 6 months thinking positive? The whole country could use it. Why does we have to think the worst of people first?

Are you kidding me with this? Where are you getting these grand statements? I am sorry, I am liberal and I am Catholic. But I don't see what religion has to do with it. I don't care who you are. People from all backgrounds contribute to their communities, in different...

Bravo urbanlife, we do tend to put more weight on the negative side of a story. Perhaps to make our own life a little better. Maybe I'm being cynical.

As far as the photo goes, whether it is being interpreted as someone taking undue advantage of free food or as how we can can all step up to volunteer regardless of our societal status or position depends on the viewer.

We all know there are people who will take advantage when they could afford to feed themselves but why should that keep us from given freely to those who do need it?

It matters very little what your income bracket is or your political or religious leaning we all need to volunteer to help those less fortunate for this is how we truly define humanity.

People from all backgrounds contribute to their communities, in different forms.
No they don't. In fact a majority people do nothing. Most cannot even get their lazy ass out and vote every 2 years. Almost ALL charity comes from religious people.

Why could we not just say "How nice, maybe I should volunteer at a homeless shelter..."
That's fine, and I do. I do need a fake who cannot even give 1% of a seven figure income setting an example for me. She is a lie. You are a lie. If she wasn't first lady, she wouldn't give a crap because she didn't before she became first lady ! And, if you want to be so charitable about the actions of others, you should be so no matter who is president. You don't have to be a POS liar, just because you like this fascist garbage.

Talk about intellectual dishonesty.

The figures Willie uses to spout charity statistics are based on what is submitted as IRS charitable deductions. Any contribution to the church qualifies for this deduction. What they don't determine is how much of that money goes to cost of running the church (overhead) and how much actually gets into the hands of those needing assistance.

I know at my parents church spent 300,000 to buy an organ. That didn't do any charitable work.

Anyone ever notice how Christian like Willie sounds?

I'm beginning to believe there is no linear POS <--> NEG line.
Two, maybe multi, dimensional? How much "POSITIVE" can one take when it is increasingly distorted and misrepresented as "POS" and is evidence of one's own denial system to fall for all that is "POS".
If I fell ...(in love with you, would you promise to be true, and ..) OH!!
Sorry.,....If I fell for this pretense (photo op/p.r.)of a true spirit of volunteerism, I would be creating more NEG as there is little POS in denial, avoidance, rationalizing, gullibi...
