masbury says: Better grow it, or buy it from a local farmer - and buy the old varieties, not the new high-producing ones. Geez, I haven't tasted a really good tomato since the '60's. They're still out there, but you do have to look for them. We had greens from a CSA a year ago - I'm sure I had never tasted such things! So good! Always buy local when possible. Better yet - grow your own! I love going out to my garden and picking a warm, ripe tomato or picking fresh green beans...all of it tastes so much better. The farmer stands are next best. Another point...perhaps a real ticking time bomb...is that many if not all of these specially produced 'high yield,' variety plants are genetically engineered so they don't produce seeds. So farmers can't save seeds for themselves to plant next year. Next year, year after year, they have to buy all their seeds once against from companies like Monsanto. I think this is true and just another reason to keep everybody awake at night (if so inclined). We can only hope that our War Against Weeds and our War Against Car Bombs eventually triumphs. 'Cause, God knows, Israel has a right to exist. We've been out of gardening for a few years, but we're starting up again this spring. My son used to eat the snow peas right from the vine when he was a toddler. He thought he was getting away with something. "'Cause, God knows, Israel has a right to exist."WTF? @boniface - Oh...sorry about that. I'm learning you have to be very careful about using sarcasm on the Web. In context I got to the thought of my country's two great wars (sarcasm) and war number one has several parts and some pros and cons but one part is a War on Weed. Our other great war (sarcasm) is a war on a tactic, like a War on Car Bombings. Both these things are (seriously) vague, wasteful, absurd, imo. This led me to the next idea that seems to be embedded in the mind of all mainstream media and politicians: Supporting Israel in whatever it does is the USA prime foreign policy. I (sarcastically) now think we should make it part of the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance ...sort of like:... @boniface - I'm glad you got it 'cause it sure was a mess of words and not my clearest day of thinking. |
