I don't think you're reading that correctly. Reid wasn't saying that the proposals were "weak" in the sense that they'd somehow "weaken" our chances of "winning" in Iraq, but that that they didn't go far enough to force Bush to re-evaluate the war as a while and start bringing our troops home.

It's been well documented that as early as Bush's first month in office, the neo-cons in the administration were trying to find a way to invade Iraq. A document (The Project for a New American Century) written by many of the neo-cons who wound up in the administration flat out says that what was needed was "another Pearl Harbor" type of attack that they could use as a justification to invade.

I'm not one who believes that they had foreknowledge of the attack and let it go ahead so they could get their excuse, nor do I think they were complicit in the attack happening, but I have absolutely, positively NO doubt that no matter how much they grieved for the people who died that day, they were also overjoyed at having been handed exactly what they wanted so they could try and obtain some measure of control over Iraq's oil fields.

Once the war was started, the military, the defense department and the administration as a whole have made one error after another after another - blunders and foul-ups as far as the eye can see.

Right now, the ONLY possible victory in Iraq for Americans is for us to get out of there without losing any more of our soldiers - and then start rebuilding not only our armed forces, but - and far more importantly - start showing the world that while we may have appeared to have lost our collective mind over the last several years, we've now found it again and would like to try and make it up to them.
