Just goes to show, if one wants to work hard, one can still succeed in the U.S.A. For a homeless girl, to finish high school in the top 10 of her class and get a full scholarship to Harvard--of course the couple she lived with her junior & senior year should be commended for helping her along her path--now the people at Harvard had better live up to their end. Especially find her a host family, who are able to help her along whatever path she chooses. She needs the love & support of a stable host family!

While I hear you Satch and I absolutely agree with what you are saying, I also want to stress that some people aren't lucky enough to be born with her level of intelligence. I sometimes think it's also very important to not lose sight of the fact that many people work hard and don't get ahead. It is often complicated and I think people like concrete answers but I admire the circumstances this young woman was able to overcome with her God-given talents, perseverance and hard work

True debbyski, but many immigrants never make it, but through sheer dint of hard work, lots of their offspring have because of the example of their parents. Whose to say because they work hard and don't get ahead by our standards--that they have failed. If they can keep a roof over their heads, food on their table(maybe not gourmet, but filling), and care for their family--how is that failing? Not getting ahead?

Yes, you are right to point out the definition of success in our society Satch.
Some of the most successful people by worldly standards are not happy.

It could seem like failure when one spouse buries the other early because they never had health insurance to buy blood pressure meds. Or when they're walking around toothless and ugly because free care only paid for teeth to be removed, not repaired. Or when they have to work when they're 80 because they never could afford to retire. Or when they have average children who have little hope but to continue the soul-crushing work that their parents did. Or when they get too sick to work. Or when they lose their babies due to inadequate prenatal care. Or when the only place they can afford to live means raising their kids in a place where they have to step over passed out drug users and us...
