Fair enough. When you're dead you're dead - you don't need those organs anymore.

Belgium has this system since 1987.
It makes much more sense to me than the other way around (a 'no', unless you specifically give your approval).

I think it is a great idea.

mee too. if anyone has objections, then have your ID say "NO" to organ donation...

The only issue that may arise is someone who was in an accident that did not have their ID on them at the time, and was of some religion that did not allow organ donations.. (i think Jehovah's Witness???) I could see a big legal battle develop as the result of such a mistake

I wish more people would sign up for organ donation. I plan to give them all they can use. I've signed up, told my parents, and told my spouse. I think it's amazing that science has developed ways to harvest so much of the body for resuse. There are also very good synthetic materials, too, but there is nothing quite like the original! We are fearfully and wonderfully made, people. Now go out and share it when you're dead.

No harm? Maybe not. But check out the scifi book OrganLeggers by Larry Niven.
During the Chinese New Year celebrations each year, large numbers of criminals are executed, their bodies have parts removed and sold in local hospitals for operations. People travel from all over Asia to China to have these operations. (BBC)

Yep, strings is right. The Chinese government sells off the organs of prisoners.

I think it's a noble cause.

Organ donation could be thought of as the ultimate Freecycle transaction !!

The REAL Napster
Recycling organs sounds great and all, unless you happen to get organs from a crackwhore, a person with HIV/AIDS, or a number of other unpleasant medical realities. People with those conditions should have their ID's marked NO regardless.

Think about it- would YOU want to recieve a gift organ from someone who has died only to find out the organs had serious medical problems? I'm sure the doctors all screen things but...nowadays you cannot be sure of much.

Canada rules, eh! Gotta love 'em for their openmindedness (wow, that word gave me a headache).

I have a kidney that used to belong to a 19 year old college student. I waited three and a half years for it. Tons of people die annually waiting for an organ donor. The main problem is not that people don't want their organs to go to someone else after they die. There are a few reasons that people don't sign the back of there driver's licenses. The main one is that no one expects to die young. Most people think they have plenty of time. Some are apathetic. Some are paranoid that doctors won't do everything they can to save them, so their organs can be harvested. I think Canadian stance is the correct one. I know I never signed that back of my license and none of my family did either until ...

Only in Canada...very slippery slope you're suggesting here. Opt out? It is not the responsibilty of an individual to "opt out". Many have suggested here that people might "forget" to check the box on their driver's license...so be it. Why don't we register people to vote even if they don't want to vote? Maybe they just forgot. Socialism at it's finest.

I don't know, the thought of me being in critical condition and the doctors looking at me thinking "Oh boy, this would be a perfect heart for the guy in 2a."

Just to clarify, I meant I think this program was a noble cause, not the Chinese govt selling off prisoners' organs

I am ok with this, except I want to know how much of me will be left. Skin is an organ. Can they take my bones? I want to know what they can take.
