invictus says: Any more members for a "lefty clippers gang"? I'm left-handed. My father was born left-handed, but for some reason his parents trained him to be right-handed and so he converted. : ) So I can definitely believe its genetic, but biology != destiny. Right. My father was right-handed and he tried to force me to use my right hand for a short time with no success when I was a child, then he gave up. He used to say he didn't intended to convert me but wanted his son to be able to use his both hands, which he thought as a great "advantage". According to the test at the source site, my left-handed rate is 8/10. I have been doing almost everything with my left hand since the beginning: writing, drawing, playing football etc. But strangely, when playing guitar, I hold it like right-handed people. Same for aiming to a target: I realized I was holding it like righ-handed guys, during my military service some 12 years ago. "holding the rifle", I was trying to say. I write with my left hand and do almost everything else with my right hand except I paint with no preference . My brother is left-hand dominant. Invictus, are you cross-eyed dominant? Most people's dominant eye is on the same side as their dominant hand. For cross-eyed dominant people, this creates a real and vexing problem when shooting rifles or shotgus. It cursed me when I first took up shooting as a kid, too. There are various workarounds for this problem, none of them ideal. I always wondered what militaries did with these people. My husband is left-handed, and we keep watching to see which hand will be dominant for our daughter. So far, I think she will be right-handed. I've never "corrected" her preference when drawing, writing or eating, etc. She usually chooses her right hand, though. I'm right-handed, but I shoot pool left-handed. I think I just learned that way, and when I try to shoot right-handed, it feels really wrong. Luckily though, I am not cross-eyed dominant. I'm right but I can do certain things better left-handled. When I was in the service I qualified in marksmanship by shooting left-handed. Me! Me! *raises left hand* I'm a lefty!! Though I play the guitar the right-handed way....when I was learning how to write my mum would tuck my left hand down my skirt/trousers so I'dwrite with my right....didn't work though...yes, my mother was evil....hehhhehe Well, I still couldn't figure it out. I read the article you linked, Jason, and did the test by making a circle with my fingers and center an object in it. At one trial, I appeared to be cross-eyed dominant and at another, it was fine with my left eye. Because I normally see two circles, not one, when trying to center the object. Anyway, it's obvious that I have a problem and probably I'm cross-eyed dominant because I instinctively put the rifle on my right shoulder and feel more comfortable this way. Shooting is not a real problem since I'm not ... I think a better method to determine one's dominant eye is to point at a distant object as quicky and instinctively as possible. Then, without moving your finger or head, alternately close one eye and then the other, and see which view causes your finger to remain on the object. This is your dominant eye. A few lucky people have equally dominant eyes. I compensated by forcing myself to close my dominant left eye when shooting. This kills your depth-perception though, so I always sucked at moving targets like in skeet or trap. Anyway, I eventually found shooting boring, so it's no worries now. That quiz was weird for me, I'd say I got about 50/50 on it. The point and close your eyes test was definatly my right, but I'm left-handed. I use my left hand to write, draw and do other small projects, but if I have to write on a chalkboard, or throw a ball, or any other large hand movements, it is almost always my right hand. I am actually quite skilled with using both though, I can write with my right hand as well, although not as nicely. I like to do a neat trick with two pens, I can write with both hands at the same time. They both come out moderately sloppy, but extremely legible. I have to write the same thing with both though. I like to do a neat trick with two pens, I can write with both hands at the same time.cool. my kid seems to be a lefty..i guess she'll be the kid usng the 'lefty' scissors in school....i could think of worse things I've been a lefty all my life... there is a website located I think in England that sells left handed materials, scissors, and such.. I'll have to go back and give them a visit and pass it on here. lefty all the way nuther lefty here |
