Aribeth says: "The methods that they chose could have killed anyone." That study of about 250 women suffering eating disorders showed the risk of death by suicide among by anorexic women to be as much as 57 times the expected rate of a healthy woman. The gruesome methods they chose as well as how they isolated themselves from rescue, Holm-Denoma says, leaves little doubt that they wished to die. Females between the ages of 15 and 24 are 12 times more likely to die from anorexia than all other causes of death, the NEDA reports. And suicide is the primary cause of death for anorexics, greater even than starvation. Holm-Denoma stresses her research highlights how seriously treatment providers must take suicide risks amongst those suffering from eating disorders. "The likelihood of whether a patient wants to lethally hurt herself must be assessed right away," Holm-Denoma says, adding, "Addressing psychiatric needs must be paramount." That's because, very often, eating disorders are symptoms of much greater psychological problems. If you can begin to recognize the passionate self-hatred that accompanies the disease, then maybe you stand the slightest chance of assisting your patient. Otherwise, you're useless to them. I had anorexia when I was very young and my family sent me to a 'specialist' therapist (which, in essence, means they were totally incompetent in any other branch of psychology.) All she ever discussed with me was my disease, why I didn't want to eat, and infuriatingly, how peculiar it was that someone as young as myself suffered an eating disorder. It's more exploitive than anything else. I recovered on my... yemangybastards,of course it was relevant(there is only one part of your comment that I disagree with but I wouldn't like to expand in a public forum),thank you very much for sharing this,I am glad you got over it and I wish you the best |
