egoldstein says: Just an fyi...in a few hours, we'll be uploading a fairly big set of changes to the clipmrks site aimed primarily at achieving two things. The first is making the site easier and more intuitive to navigate (get anywhere from anywhere in less clicks). The second is a much greater ability to learn about and connect with other clippers on the site. This will be a continuing driving force behind much of our development in June. The first stages will be introduced tonight. Hope you enjoy... Looking forward to the changes. Even though I like it here just fine. I smell new great surprises for us... Can't wait to see them. I think the navigation here is pretty good. One thing that does bother me is that the video and non-video clips are separated. I think if they were all together that the video clips would get more attention. I know I rarely go to the video side and that I am reluctant to clip videos because they don't get as much attention. n2sooners, Completely revamping the interface is a common exercise for Team Clipmarks (mostly for the better - in the rare case that a regression should occur, it's usually fixed in a week or two) Where's today's Clipiversity? Slackers! Will we get a dashboard button with this update? I like the dashboard, but it take me THREE clicks to get there. laceym, The Dashboard button was "removed" because apparently it causes extra load to the Clipmarks servers. I'm the official unofficial spokesperson for Clipmarks! You can save the Dashboard in your Bookmarks Toolbar. Get there in one click. It does take a few seconds to load. Sure like it, tho. I miss the dashboard; but I'm sure you've come up with something better. Dashboard is still there. Under help, scroll to bottom left. my list of things Id like to see ... 1. re/move Featured Topics, Featured Clippers, Featured Popper (the entire far right column) 2, remove the up/down buttons at the bottom of the 'reading' section (right hand panel) and replace it with a proper scroll bar 3. allow the width of the 'Clips' and the 'reading' sections to be changed (and remembered) or better still allow all the elements to be positioned and sized and show/hide (expand/collapse) hope this helps n2, I agree with you about the separate video site, I think it is based on digg format. I do not understand the wisdom behind it, but there must be one. I am liking the new improvements. Really like the "Most recently active" my clippers. Two words: Holy Cow I agree, perfection has been redefined yet again. Both your goals were met. But I am curious, is the Custom sort feature gone now? And I noticed when I search "my clips" not all the clips that should come up come up, as per the e-mail I sent you a week or two ago. Seems to not search the tags of my private clips. thanks BitDrifter and arifsali. So, as you can see, the new site is now live. Just to make sure that you're seeing everything new, you should probably click your browser's refresh button or press f5. There are lots of goodies associated with this one. I'd say to just play around, explore and see what you find. One little gem that i've been enjoying is the Clipper Card that opens on mouseover of a username or profile image in most places. As for the rest of it, go discover it all...hope you enjoy! BitDrifter, we haven't forgot about you. The problem you experienced with tags is at the top of our list to get fixed. Tiny problem: When I select Clips & Videos from the drop down, I don't see any videos. I can see videos if I select Videos only. I did the Ctrl + F5 One little gem that i've been enjoying is the Clipper Card that opens on mouseover of a username or profile image in most places.I'm right there with you, I like this feature also. BitDrifter, we haven't forgot about you. The problem you experienced with tags is at the top of our list to get fixed. Thanks! ok, the Clips & Videos filter option is fixed. If your in the list now you will need to do another refresh, if not then you will see the videos the next time you go there. Thanks. One more question, I forgot how to add or edit "my topics"? Never mind, I got it. Nice job. Good to see your personal stuff is easier to find. Love the drop down menus and the pop up information. I really love that you can combine clips and videos. Just two minor things I think would be an improvement. First make Clips & Videos the default. Not a big deal now that you can combine them, but I think it is better to show new members all the clips and then let them choose if they want to sort them out. Second, have it remember your choice much like the live results remembers your choice. Like I said, minor things. Nice job guys. Another minor bug I have noticed. When you have sort set to clips and videos, you pick up clips from clippers whose clips you have ignored. I also noticed that before the change you would pick up ignored clips after the first forty when you clicked in next 40. I've just remarked the changes on a clip, as it happens. It looks really good. Love the changes. Can't wait to play with them. Where can you change sort to Clips & Videos? I saw it, but can't find it now. I did Ctrl+F5. All I get is Clips only and Videos only. I them separated, but also would like the choice to combine them. I found it. It's under All Clippers. Not on your homepage. I could just kiss you all. I have my calendar back!!! SMOOCH. Oooh. Now that I'm done kissing everyone, I noticed what BitDrifter asked: What happened to custom sort? Unfortunately, custom sort had to go. I'm not saying it will never come back, but it was simply causing us to much load on our servers so it had to go for now. As for remember the "Clips & Videos" filter option, we will most likely do that in the coming week though I can't guarantee it. As for the blocked users showing up in the all clippers list, we have done some testing and can not find a scenario where this happens. If you have a specific scenario that you would like us to try, please email support@clipmarks.com. Guys, can I make a comment, perhaps some of you may not like it, but I feel this new change has made this site more complicated and difficult for average user. The number one feedback I get when recommending this site is that it is too technical. I think for us who have been here for a while, it may not be technical and difficult but new and average user of the internet may feel overwhelmed by all these menus, navigation links etc. I don't know, I may be over reacting but I feel that majority of internet users are average types who like simplicity and this site I'm afraid is getting more complicated now. arifsali, i'll go out on a limb with this one, but i think you won't feel that way after using the site for a few days. i think you're just used to the way that it used to be, so this now seems more confusing. i have never felt so sure about a series of changes than the ones we just introduced. that said, always appreciate the honest feedback...lets see in a few days once you've had a chance to adjust. I was just coming here to post basically what arifsali said. They seem somewhat confusing to me right now, I'm sure I'll get used to it. But the interface of Clipmarks is certainly busy. I agree with arifsali. I've given the changes some time to get used to and adopt too but it's not quite clicking for me. I'm a big fan for simplicity but find the drop down fields rather annoying. I enjoyed seeing my username on the right side with all the options clearly visible to click on for: My Clips, My Pops, My Comments, ect. Now I'm forced to click and drop down ... nope not an improvement. I also believe that the average user might not be fond of the U.I. That's just a gut feeling though but it comes from years of experience with customers, quality and product management. I personally miss the 'serendipitious discovery' terminology in yellow over on the right side. I was qui... BTW, I just don't like the workaround of having the you are username and myitems removed from the right side and replaced by the box with links to My Clips, My Pops and My Comments. I think it's great that you are working on improvements, but good user feedback is needed to drive them in a way that is truly user friendly. I'm not sure if you have the resources for a proper focus study but I'm sure that there are enough users here with great ideas to help out Unfortunately, custom sort had to go.Can you hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth? It is going to take me awhile to learn to navigate the site without this feature. I know Derek is smart enough to find a way to bring it back (like my calendar). I also want to say HOORAY for the date/time stamp on comments. I really missed those. I'm totally lost without the custom sort option. Everything else looks awesome! I never used the custom button...now I wonder what I missed.... Guys, you have outdone yourselves. The changes are great! Much simpler to find everything. The drop-downs keeps the page clutter-free. I like how easy it is to see if something has already been clipped. The Clipper Card is genius. Everything in one box. The "Most recently active..." is the best way to stay on top of the clips! Love this addition. Most of the changes are made from user requests. I'm sure I speak for most of us here, we appreciate you listening to us. Thanks!! Now, the next thing we want...... I enjoyed seeing my username on the right side with all the options clearly visible to click on for: My Clips, My Pops, My Comments, ect. Now I'm forced to click and drop down ... nope not an improvement.I do agree with this one, I did enjoy just having these sort/filter options one click away. Thanks much for the feedback everyone. We will def take it into consideration with the next update. As for the comments about getting rid of the custom sorting option, nobody hated the thought more than me, I promise...but I have to say, after a week without it, I didn't miss it anymore. I really hope we can bring it back some day, but it really did have to go for now as it was not only causing us increased server load but double the development time too. Couldn't agree more about "channel surf the clipped web" We're changing it back right now to "serendipitous discovery" As for the other comments on this clip, we definitely appreciate the feedback, and like djkraz said, we'll give it all strong consideration. i do firmly stand by my belief that most of what you're not comfortable about is more a matter of breaking old habits than poor user interface. like i said, i think you can't really know that until after you've used it for a few days. i've had the benefit of using our development site for about a week now, and i can tell you that i think there is absolutely no comparison between the ease of navigation and clean u.i. of the current version versus the prior one. Serendipitous discovery is much better. Thanks for changing it back! I like the rest of the changes that I've seen here. The pop-out with info on the clipper whose name your cursor rests on is an interesting feature. I have used it several times today and found some good clips to pop just by seeing the clipper's last action. It is great to be able to see clips and videos at the same time, although it would be nice if we could set "clips and videos" as our default setting. No big deal, though. I don't think that you modified the search feature, but I want to thank you again for adding it. It makes clipping so much more rewarding when you can enter a word or two and find out what has alr... You said it, gingembre... Ok here's a more detailed analysis. Like: The Clipper Card's "Last Action" Feature Most recently active Calendar The Minor enhancements (such as the "View my Topics") Dislike: The Clipper Card itself. I really don't see a reason for the other info on there Removing Custom Setting Drop Down Menus. For some reason it's cluttered to have it there that not too That's all for now Seriously though...get some sleep Thank you for bringing back 'serendipitous discovery'. I really enjoy this feature and terminology. I love this little gem. You don't have to click to access the drop down menus, just mouse over them When I look at comments, it always defaults to "when I commented." Is there any way to set the default for "latest comment?" Thanks! I noticed that too, Mousie. T'would be useful. Everything I wanted to say has been said, Thank you everyone! Eric, thanks to you and to your colleagues for new great achievements! Well, now I can’t help not to have my own small proposal, too… What about adding a new scroll option (together with “top”, “end” and “scroll”), for example named “nxtC” (next comment) - for comfortable scrolling from one comment header to another. I am not always interested to read just all comments (or not all text in one comment), so will be great I can just jump with one click (or with key shortcut, too!) directly to the beginning of the next comment. Ya know I have absolutely no fault to find with all the improvements and innovations, in fact q and so it pains me to actually ask for more. However would it be possible to oops! Would it be possible to put the categories list in two columns as no matter how hard I try my category list keeps growing, thus making it an increasly tedious chore going down down down to find the appropriate category? You will notice that I'm trying to enter the Guiness book of records for a long sentence. II meant collections of clips, not categories. I thank you in advance fore your patient understanding. Today I found out my "official" explanation why I use Clipmarks I don’t like linear things: linear travelling (high-roads), linear news (TV, newspapers), linear thinking (any kind of “-ism-s”) etc. Linear is narrower, nonlinear is freer; but it is truth, too, that linear is sometimes more efficient and nonlinear more chaotic; so it is not wise to be too linear in practicing nonlinearity…Ah, this funny world of paradoxes… I found the way information comes together on Clipmarks is very creative and exiting combination of linearity (researching pages and clipping) and nonlinearity (researching clips, popping and commenting). Superb idea, great implementation! And it is still under development… creative and exiting combination = creative and exciting combination duvelic, that is an awesome way to say it!! really warms my heart to read, as that is just about exactly what we're trying to offer. Oh, thanks Eric, I am happy you like this my thoughts! Simply through exceedingly big number of your clips, pops and comments on Clipmarks it is obvious how intensively and enthusiastically you work here! My compliments again! oh, dear, my English... "these my thoughts", of course... CMGods, any chance - in next release - on reducing the time it takes to make any average clip? Compared to other slightly comparable sites (newsvine, digg etc) I think it takes longer to make a clip, though I can see that reducing the time may cause the quality of contents to go down. What happened to the star on our homepage to find list of our popped clips in descending order? It was there, then gone. Hey, I don't know what you guys are doing to the site, but this My Clipper's Mix and My Clipper's Pops, especially in the live window on the front page, is work of a genius. I think it will rock the site. I'm not too excited seeing my own links at the front page, so if you could expand the My Clipper's live box then I think it would be very cool. It is just awesome to see activities by My Clippers in a live window, gives a whole new meaning to social-bookmarking. Oh, ignore my comments above, about my own clips. I see what you're doing, this box is also alive, it is showing me what others are doing to my clips (including myself when I make comments). Whoaa, brilliant. Hey, I don't know what you guys are doing to the site, but this My Clipper's Mix and My Clipper's Pops, especially in the live window on the front page, is work of a genius. I think it will rock the site.I'm right there with ya arifsali. Thank you arifsali and BitDrifter. Honestly, we are equally excited about this...i've been giddy for a couple of days now leading up to its release Nice Features! I need to get more people in my list of Clippers Hi, Eric! ouyangwulong gave me an idea about perhaps very exciting possibility on clipmarks: second, third, fort… etc “stage pop”. Basic idea is: after x numbers (maybe 6) of comments from different clippers the same clip becomes pop-able again for everybody; and after another 6 comments again, and so on. Every new stage of pops gets its own “stage pop number” together with overall pop number. On this way we get additional hierarchy of important clips (made by clippers decisions through their comments). Aditionall possibility should exist than to select clips filtered by “stage pop number”. This way some most important clips/topics would survive much longer and new filter would give us enti... Guys, I must write this again. I have been here for more than a year now and I can honestly say that this is the first I'm having such a blast visiting CM at various times of the day. The Clipper's Mix feature (I would trademark it fast), especially the ability to see what your fellow Clippers have popped and have commented (basically gives you the visibility to those clippers who are not on your list) is one the absolute best feature of Clipmarks. I think no other website provides this feature as of now. This feature really needs a wide exposure with some explanation from the CM Gods for those who may not know what it is all about.. |
