It was made by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal.</p> <P>This hand is designed at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level. It has a base of iron and cement, and stands 11 meters tall. This piece of art was opened on march 28, 1992.</p> <P>Mario Irarrázabal also designed other sculptures in Punta del Este, in Uruguay in 1982, in the city of Madrid in 1987, and in Venice 1995. The location of the Hand of the Desert is in the middle of the driest desert on the earth at Chile. This hand express the need for care and for interest.
