i sympathize with the Boston University College Republicans. this day & age, this is a issue worth attention. universities are filled with reverse discrimination.

Kind of funny how most of the people at Yale are still rich and white, then.

Err ... I don't know why, for some reason I had the idea that the article was about Yale students. Never mind.

I don't understand why these scholarships aren' t just based on economical hardship and possibly educational disadvantage (although to me that comes largely from economic factors too). What disadvantages are there for someone of a minority race that a white person in a similar socioeconomic situation doesn't have (assuming that both are legal citizens and not recent migrants)

I agree with maddi, for the most part.. scholarships SHOULD be based on need, not race. It offends me that in a society that is trying to remove racism from it's ranks, that we are promoting it in these ways. The fact is, that the same kids are likely to get the scholarship regardless if there is a restriction of race or not because in many cases, these are the kids that need it. I think the student group has some guts, but I don't envy them for the fallout that will come as a result.. .unfortunately, Boston still has quite a bit of racism... They will likely be called racist themselves for this attempt

yeah i agree these types of things definately promote rascism. i can't say anything about the us, but here in australia we have a similar situation with benefits for aboriginals. all it does is breed resentment among non-aborginals and a sense of entitlement among many aboriginals who have no real need for government benefits. i guess its similar to how people are now concerned by boys lagging behind in schools after all the attention was focused on educating women, at some point it reaches reverse discrimination.

For one thing, African-Americans have much less wealth than white Americans. Even if you compare blacks and whites at the same income levels, you still will get this result. [1]

For another thing, blacks are much more likely to live in areas of concentrated poverty than whites are.

Finally, there is pretty good evidence that employers discriminate against blacks [1,[url=http://www.nber.or...

That blacks are discriminated against by employers i acknowledge, but as for your other two reason, aren't they socioeconomic? In my opinion, in a system where scholarships were awarded soley on financial need and socioeconomic disadvantage, the makeup of recipients might not change a whole lot, but it is not the fact the black people receive a large share of benefits that bothers me, just the idea of judging worthiness/neediness solely on race.

We think giving out a scholarship based on any race is crazy
Why?
