Does the mother not know that children's books have a theme that the author will follow. Something that young minds can lock onto to help them understand the book. I don't know how it works in Ireland, but the books in most Australian schools are vetted by the librarian, and the Parent Council if any doubt.
I think that too many kids these days lack respect for others and themselves. Being able to pretend that they are in the book protest, they will know how to act with confidence. To me the main point is that the parents were there to be involved and supportive. And the kids showed self confidence and self respect because of it. Valuable lessons.

Who let those kids out of their Government Sanctioned Hamster Ball of Protection From Parental Influence (tm)?

I love how you all made this immediatly into an "us" and "them" argument. I'm often associated with a more socialist trend because of the various things I agree with but on this particular story I disagree (as with many other "socialist" ideals I don't agree with). Yet I'm labeled a "socialist" or "democrat" or "liberal" because I judge each situation and happen to agree with some on both sides of an ideal.

Is this story some 'socialist" story? Or is it just a friendly feel good story about children standing up for something that was part of their childhood? I disagree with someone telling me what to do with my own property, but I think some of you are reading far into what the story and ju...

Trees belong to whoever owns the land. You want to keep the trees - buy the land. Otherwise take a hike.

I would think of it as just a children's story. It's like Horton Here's A Who by Dr. Seuss. The pro-life said it was about being anti abortion. Dr. Seuss' widow had to threaten to sue pro-life unless they dropped it as their slogan. She said it was written as a simple story for children. As was this book about the tree.

I never did understand how pro-life thought Horton Hears a Who was about being anti-abortion, but that's another story. This book that was clipped is disturbing--a book for children about protesting a landowner cutting down a tree on his property. What parent would allow his child on another's property until it had been cleared with the new landowner simply because the previous landowner had (would they, if they were a new owner in the neighborhood, want other children on their property if they didn't have children?) Is that what the world is coming to, no respect for another person's space/property? What about the parents teaching their children about the rights of the new owner. Is th...

This book is probably based on a true story: http://deadspin.com/322153/one-way-to-get-tree+sitters-down

To me, this book seems to teach children about the wrong way to protest, like some groups that chain themselves to buildings & such. Throw a temper tantrum & you'll get your way. I''m not against protesting, but there is a right way & a wrong way.

In America, at least, what is on your land is yours. Whether it be trees, oil, gold, flowers, whatever.
