'being shot, in the face... being shot, in the face... being shot, in the face...' Hilarious! It's been a trip watching Jon Stewart rise to the top ranks of Those Whose Opinion Matter in America. Who knew that a daily satire show would become a key player in helping to diffuse the pompous, ubiquitous spin pumped out by professional media-manipulators every day. The next generation may be cynical and sarcastic as hell thanks to shows like The Daily Show, but they're also skeptical as hell due to shows like The Daily Show. Deservedly. That's a very good point, kore7. And, who would have known that such a thing could have happened in America in the current climate? American political culture is as fractious as ever, but if it appears monolithic from the outside, that's not an accident. Absolute unilateral power is precisely what the US neocons have aimed for both within their country and without. To a large degree, they have succeeded. Watch out Middle-East...and Asia, we've got plans for you, too... "...but if it appears monolithic from the outside, that's not an accident." It does to some extent, yes. And although most of us know better, intellectually, we are so constantly reminded of, as you describe it, the absolute unilateral power that the Bush Administration is turning the US into, that it's becoming increasingly difficult for outsiders to think of anyone, particularly the media, having any autonomy at all. (Apologies for the run-on sentence.) That a funny video! Did anyone notice the bird fly nervously by in the right corner of the frame? I doubt that it was a quail. At least not one of those with clipped wings. |
