Who cares!?!? We're electing someone to be President of the United States. Someone who will be empowered with massive authority who will make decisions that impact the lives of everyone. The fact that they can shoot birds is just entirely irrelevant to me. Scratch that...the fact that they enjoy shooting birds makes me think they definitely should not be president.

And i really despise Huckabee referring to killing birds as "knowing the culture of being outdoors." For me, being outdoors consists of activities such as having a catch, lying on the beach, skiing, walking in the park and a lot of other things that don't result in the death of any living being.

You are a New Yorker Eric. You only mattered on Sept. 11th, not now.

Ye, dead right. Yet, he might just shoot himself in the foot. He he.

Huckabee's antics in the last few weeks (shooting birds, saying America needs to turn to Christ, the floating cross commercial) might impress fundamentalist hicks - and I was raised as one, so I know whereof I speak.

However, these things are making him less and less attractive as a national candidate. The thought of him in the Oval Office makes me ill.

This just shows that this candidate has no clue what the job of President means.

While I dont see anything wrong with hunting, I don't do it myself. Hunting is a big part of our culture and tho it isn't our main source for food anymore it does touch base with our humble hunter/gatherer beginnings.

If we were a hunter/gatherer society it might be important for a representative of the people to know how to hunt. Since we are a scientific, worldwide culture our representative needs to be in touch with the conditions of the planet, wishes of the people and world economics.
We need a president that can effectively represent the will of the people to the rest of the world. This person must be...

I think it is high time for the Dept of's to stand up and accept the ball.

The Dept of Transpotation (DOT) needs to be held accountable for everything transportation. This includes emmissions related to the industry. The issues related to DOT should be publicized so people can vote on them. Once the ball is formed it should be submitted to the President and Congress.

Great Clip.
We don't need any more politicians with guns -- unless he wants to go hunting with Cheney.
Seriously, I agree with everything you said in your comment and you said it much better than I could've.

Regardless of the guns/no guns issue, I would appreciate it when a politician who doesn't own, operate guns, or go hunting merely said so instead of trying to concoct some story to pander to a group of voters (Mitt Romney). Being a hunter does not sway my vote one bit but being a liar certainly affects my vote.

I hope there is room in the debate for those of us who do hunt and own guns that would normally be used in hunting (not AK-47's and semi-automatic pistols with multi round clips). A great deal of land preservation and reconditioning is conducted by hunter's licensing and participation with organizations such us Ducks Unlimited. I do find it ridiculous and pathetic though when someone claims they need a machine gun for deer hunting.

BobbyRutan,
I have some reservations about shooting, but I agreed wholeheartedly with what you stated above. In general, I agree with most of what is stated here. Where have all the bush-huggers gone?

Being an "outdoors man", as those in the hunting culture call themselves, is an important distinction to members of that culture. They feel marginalized, discounted, even under attack. As such they become tribal and see the world in us v. them terms. The Huckster is taking advantage of that by showing which team he is on. Some here are showing that they belong to the opposite team, but these people are 1) not likely to be voting for the Huckster and 2) are unlikely to be Republican and vote for someone running against the Huckster. This is a win-win for him. And funnily enough, those bashing him for this move reenforce the tribalism and strengthen this move to identify with "outdoors men". So I would say it is a win-win-win.

The "Huckster" is showing that he is quite an astute politician and campaigner.

Once the primaries are over I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the kitchen converting his kill to cider-braised pheasant with pearl onions and apples in an appeal to the "Martha Stewart men".

But can he represent ALL of the WE THE PEOPLE to the rest of the world?

To all those who are trying to use this to prop up Huckabee I say "So what, he went hunting?" And to those who are trying to tear him down because he went hunting I say "So what, he went hunting?" I don't feel like going hunting makes one a good or a bad president.

As for fundamentalist hicks, well I am southern baptist and I go to church in the sticks. I don't know if I exactly fit the definition of a fundamentalist hick, but I am sure some people I know do. And the one thing I have never heard from any of them is anything at all about Huckabee. I just don't understand who the hell is supporting this guy. Makes me wonder a lot about these polls because I have met more Ron Paul supporters than Huckabee supporters.

Bobby You are right on target, I hunt, fish, and hike. Showboating is not an outdoors person. I rabbit hunt just to hear the dogs and have companionship with others that love the outdoors, give most of my venison to the poor, steam-can one or two, that is more than enough for the Misses and I. Remember GW competed against Ann Richards and shot a protected bird; are we going to to hand over the trigger to that same type person again. That was a dove hunt, who does not know the bird of peace. Clinton went duck hunting and shot ducks, Cheney went quail hunting and shot a man, do I need say more.

Look out, the Huckster is going to buy a ranch in Crawford and start clearing mesquite.

Big B If the Huckster operates a chainsaw like GW, I vote for Putin, remember when GW told Putin that someday Russia may have a democracy like Iraq, Putin made an Ass out of GW. Just a pun; but do not the similarities speak for themselves. I seriously doubt if either one could figure where to to put the gas or bar chain oil. A hand held posthole digger would would be like the planet Mars. Bobby, just keep them in Texas..
