I found this comment to an article enlightening. Exit Polls are adjusted by networks to match closer to the actual tally of the vote. So when you look at CNN or MSNBC's exit polls this is not the actual opinion of those who took the exit poll, it has been adjusted to be more in line with the official vote tally.
