Most Americans don't know much about Canada, period. It's perplexing. It's not perplexing - we have a lousy public education system... that's all there's to it. RS, I think that our lousy public education system is certainly part of the problem, but there's more to it than that. It's as if we have little or no curiosity about other countries and cultures other than our own, even as we grow to be adults who theoretically can research on our own instead of having a teacher assign us homework. Perhaps our education system stunts our curiosity and stifles the drive for lifelong learning. Or perhaps it's our entire social system, of which our public education system is only a part, which does this to us collectively. That is what I meant when I said that it is perplexing. That's just it, when kids are kids - they need to be protected as well as told what to do and forced to learn. I don't mean forced to learn about liberals or conservatives or whether Heather has 2 mommies - I mean learn how to add 2 & 2 and point to Nebraska on the map and spell 'thoroughly' correctly (did I spell that right? Hello, I was practicing building a webpage for the first time. I thought it would be fun to post what Americans know and don't know about Canada. For example, hardly anyone in America knows the name of your President. Or that you have a Prime Minister, not a President: http://Hawkins54321.googlepages.com/ Let me know if you found the little website I created either fun or illuminating. I could make it larger, but I was just having some fun. Cute little site, although some of the statements are just as ignorant as it's trying to imply. Some of the facts stated are totally useless, like the fact that Jim Carrey is from Canada. So was John Candy, Martin Short and Eugene Levi... The bigger question to ask - who cares? Those are all unimportant trivialities at best. Jim Carrey appears on a lot of Canadian's "tribute to Canada" photo montage pages. The site was put of for fun. It's not about whether the information is important or not. It's whether the average person in the US would know the info or not. Celine Dion=yes Jim Carrey=no Montreal speaks French=yes Name of your Prime Minister=no Canada plays ice hockey=yes Canada has oil=no Canadian currency is called the "dollar"=yes Canada has normal trade relations with Cuba=no etc... To further refine the point: There is very ecclectic, specific set of facts Americans know about Canada. Beyond that, Americans know almost nothing about The True North. For example, there are more guys in the US that can name all three members of Rush, than can tell you the name of your Prime Minister. For the record - we DON'T have a Prime Minister. Maybe prior to harping on us (Americans) about our lack of Canadian knowledge - you should learn a thing or two about America. |
