Lou Dobbs is a sad sad case. He's willing to say anything, right or wrong, to support his agenda, and I think he knows it. He's misstated and distorted facts on crime, disease, and the impact of immigration on virtually every issue, just to promote his increasingly intolerant personal views. If he did this in a newspaper I was editing, I would fire him. None of it would see print.

But that is not to say there are not others who make persuasive arguments for change. Legal immigration is always better than illegal immigration, and by opening our country up as it once was instead of trying to seal it off, we would be protecting both our nation, our government, and the immigrants who cross our borders.

But Lou Dobbs never makes these arguments. He never addresses the cruel inequities in US immigration policy, and the agenda of corporate powers who rely on exploited illegal workers. He does not acknowledge that these people will be coming, whether we want them to or not. He does not make any proposal to create a safe alternative to illegal immigration. He does not propose any solutions to the problems in the immigration system that have created this crisis.

Instead, in the substance of his arguments, he is not only against illegal immigration, but legal immigration as well. There are people who draw inspiration from Lou Dobbs who want to take down the welcome sign at the Statue of Liberty, and replace it with one that says "go home, we don't want you." This is despicable and anti-American.
