This article popped up (sorry, couldn't resist that one!) on New Scientist some time ago.

While the argument for re-introduction is sound -- the principle reason being North America is so big, you could easily host such a large ecosystem -- the predilection some Americans have for hunting would offer a prize too tempting for some to pass up...
