AtlLiberal says: From the article: "Columbus and his men also used the Taino as sex slaves: it was a common reward for Columbus’ men for him to present them with local women to rape. As he began exporting Taino as slaves to other parts of the world, the sex-slave trade became an important part of the business, as Columbus wrote to a friend in 1500: “A hundred castellanoes (a Spanish coin) are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten (years old) are now in demand.” It seems Chris was a naughty, naughty boy. The first chapter of the People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn, has an excellent summary of just how naughty ol' Chris Columbus really was. Let's just say, he would never be a hero by modern standards. I also would recommend Zinn to anyone who, like myself, thought that history was a recitation of dry facts and dates. He brought history to life for me. These marauders who became rich in the New World definitely know how to hold onto all that wealth! It is a simple, time honored recipe. Keep the poor in starving and overpopulated conditions of deprivation. Whenever they begin to complain and have expectations of consideration from the aristocratic classes this is a sign. The descendants of these marauders know that their human slave army is ready to turn out of the country. They do this by squeezing them just a bit more, for instance, raising the price of tortillas by 300% in a few weeks. Oh yes, for extra effect they will jail the only educated people who will speak for poor, the teachers and other lower middle class tradespeople. Yes wh... History is not a science, it is an art form who's purpose, is to frame the legacy or condemnation of a time through the eyes of the writer. Sometimes it is accurate, like a portrait. Sometimes artistic license is considered an acceptable justification for making something ugly beautiful or the reverse. The problem becomes clear when there are conflicting reports or evidence. Sometimes they can suggest what didn't happen, but don't make what did any clearer. One historian can only see a small fraction of the world around around them, so history is a collaborative effort. Wikki: "Financially broke after the Granada campaign, the monarchs left it to the royal treasurer to shift funds among vari... An interesting clip and comments. I clipped recently a comment from Governor John Winthrop praying that America be spared from the evil of Democracy! As ever, the comment from Pokkets is wise and refreshing: history is a story. Someone asked the other day why intelligent westerners seem to hate their culture. They don't. Culture is a continuing struggle for meaning, the best art and history for instance are challenges to the dead weight of received attitudes and values. History at its best is a dynamic, imaginative energy that keeps culture alive by constantly reinterpreting the past and thereby questioning the present. Culture is a continuing struggle for meaning, the best art and historyI received my introduction to American history in the '50s. I daresay that the history books at that time were little more than the official government, sanitized propaganda. Inspiring to a 7 year old but not really grounded in reality. Someone asked the other day why intelligent westerners seem to hate their culture.Could this question possibly come from someone who has been fed the sanitized version of history? It seems as though some people treat history like religion. They want it to represent a neat and eas... They have to treat it as a religion. To question their mythical view of America is to threaten their power base. If they are not superior, then their claims of power and superiority disappear. |
